To quote one character's summary of the situation early on in this book, "[we're]...driving across the country with a grasshopper, a time-warping flute, and floating stones after being attacked by monsters with tails from another universe...". And that's only the tip of the iceberg.

Take a mellow/complex/multi-layered urban fairy story by someone like de Lint, but then make it creepier, weirder, more violent and a little bit unhinged. Add the Fields, (hero characters, (Mom, Dad, sons and daughters), who have odd abilities and deeply weird vibes who sort of feel like the Waltons, but with arcane magic). Put them in possession of strange artifacts stolen from Lovecraftian horror creatures, Fetches, who occupy the strange parallel world of Lux. Shake it all up and start the chase.

Sometimes this is too manic and, if there can be such a thing, too inventive for its own good. Lots and lots of made up words, creatures, worlds, concepts, and so on. But most of the time the reader can follow the plot and the action, and if one gets a little lost along the way the main plot outline eventually comes into focus and stays clear. Basically, someone or something killed grandma many years ago, trouble has been stirred up in Lux, the Fetches are back in our world and want something, and it's all connected to the Fields.

Each member of the Field clan has a distinct personality and the action rockets between and among them as they become separated and then reunite during the course of their chase/quest. Add about two dozen secondary characters. Include sharp dialogue, interior monologues, story telling, lots of exposition and some oracular guidance.

I am always on the look out for new books that appeal to both young and more mature readers, and was delighted to read Volume 1 of the The Lux Campfire Chronicles. It took me several chapters to begin to assimilate all the new vocabulary and characters and I am anxious to learn how the four sibilings progress on their hunt for their grandmother's murderer. Although there are several scenes and characters that were striking (who wouldn't like the moose?), my favorite may be the ride on the New York subway (my grandfather was an engineer for the NY Transit Authority in the 1950s so I have soft spot for the subway). Laird Foster: can't wait to read the next installment.
