Editorial Reviews
Review
"An enjoyable page-turner with a reluctant hero who's as engaging as he is impulsive." - Kirkus Reviews
"Jesse Few, the hero of LYING FOR A LIVING, is a great creation, a Viagra-popping traveling paper salesman with a married girlfriend, a hot ex-wife he can't get over, troubled children and a posse of salty golfing buddies who have his back as Jesse sets out to avoid adulthood and fails, as all the good ones do. The story of his journey to save his son moves like Jesse's pearl-colored Escalade, barreling up the shoulder past the gridlocked traffic on the interstate. I couldn't resist it." -David Payne, author of BAREFOOT TO AVALON
"This wonderfully entertaining debut, full of vivid southern characters, announces Steve McCondichie as a writer to watch." -Naeem Murr, Winner of the COMMONWEALTH'S WRITER PRIZE
"Steve McCondichie offers readers a likable rogue in Jesse Few and quickly has us rooting for Jesse to become the lovable hero of his story. In addition to creating a memorable protagonist, McCondichie also provides us with a distinctive and surprising cast of secondary characters who keep the scenes fresh, funny, and sometimes poignant." -George Weinstein, award-winning author of AFTERMATH and HARDSCRABBLE ROAD
"The Southern tenor of the novel plays heavily to family ties and generational responsibilities. Colorful, and laced with wry and witty dialogue, the abundant humor and memorable references make this book an absolute gem."-Evan Williams, Award-winning author of ONE APPLE AT A TIME
From the Author
In 2008, and 2009, when the economy was wreaking havoc, I experienced the effects from a variety of angles: failed family businesses, busted subdivisions, and friends moving back in with their folks. There wasn't a Southern city left unscathed; the exburbs were filled with ghost neighborhoods. I decided to create a derelict dad, put him under pressure, and see what happens. On the surface he's the typical business traveler you'd see in the airport, and like a lot of characters in the novel, Jesse finds that self-deception is vital in making it through the day. It's a mid-life coming-of-age story. A blend of slightly dark humor, family drama, and modern Southern Gothic.

Steve McCondichie has hit a home run with Lying for A Living and its messy protagonist Jesse Few. I know this guy. He’s everywhere in the South, golfing with my dad when I was a kid and slugging ‘em back in the 19th Hole poker game. I even worked for a real estate developer just like Jesse, except that Jesse has a conscience that ultimately helps him work his way out of the many holes he’s dug for himself. There’s a sweet and subtle depth to Jesse that makes us care about him a good deal and that drives us to find out how he will get out of yet another disaster. McCondichie writes so refreshingly well and knows how to keep the plot moving. Lying for A Living is a real treat, and I highly recommend it.

Hold on tight, you’re in for a ride! Steve McCondichie has captured the heart of the modern South. Most Southerners have known someone like Jesse Few. Jesse is hopelessly stuck on himself, hopelessly in love with his ex-wife, and hopelessly devoted to his crazy mother (most of us have one of those too), yet somehow Jesse himself is not hopeless. In fact, I found myself cheering him on throughout the story- hoping he would become the man he really longed to be. There are many themes in this gem of a book— love, friendship, family, aging, ghosts, and finally redemption. The story is woven all the way through with colorful Southern expressions, characters, and familiar places; yet it is never cliché. A must-read!

Jesse is the center of a complicated family - his momma with lots of exes, half sibling, stepfather, ex-inlaw, ex-wife, kids, and his buddies who are all family. He furthers the complications with women and their various family burdens. Jesse is capable and loyal -- and a mess. At the end of the day he is there for family.
A good Southern man to know when the chips are down. The mystery surrounds his Mommas fears and spirit visitations, the visions of his sons girlfriend, and the enforcer baptist preacher. Jesse is the negotiator who might be able to talk his way out of any crisis.
The book is good. What it lacks is more. The hints of visions and back from the dead intruders could be laced in earlier and more often - we want more of that stuff. This new author is off to a very good start with rich characters in engaging theater.

Anyone born in the south has either gone to high school with or had a cousin like Jesse Few--not to mention the crazy momma, nut-case preacher, and troubled son. This was a good romp through the family and life of a contemporary southern not-so gentleman. Few tries to do good, but it seems to backfire on him so much you end up rooting for him. Other than thinking the author had somehow peeked into my family history, I enjoyed this tale of big woe and tiny triumphs.

Clients are the least of lyin' Jesse Few as he navigates the complications of the 'sandwich' generation, dealing with aging parents and girlfriends half his age. Lying for a Living is a heartfelt drama of middle age crazy that sticks long in the mind after the reader turns the last page. This is one to enjoy.

What a ride! Mccondichie delivers an excellent tale of real estate deals, family drama, and wild escapades. Few's grandiloquent life seems perfect for the screen! I'll have my popcorn with extra butter!!!

MY THOUGHTS
Jesse Few is a sales rep and selling he does. He sells lies. Although he's 49 years old, he's still stuck in his teen years, he hasn't grown up. Will or can he change? Jesse is dealing with a lot. He has a mother that is in another world and he is creating more and more battles for himself. He is divorced. Imagine that! He doesn't seem to do anything right, that is, except, LIE! He's quite a good liar. He also likes his younger women, loves his drink and loves, absolutely loves to lie. The read is fast paced with settings you may be familiar with. There is a lot of humor to the book but in another way, it's sad. A 49 year old who hasn't grown up and basically, lies for a living. But then, that's so true in life at times. You meet them all the time. So convincing and yet so deceiving. But when the going actually gets rough, will Jesse buck up and be a man? Will he take care of family business in an adult way or will he just be the "small" symbol of a man that he has been? The book was an entertaining read but I had a bit of trouble relating to Jesse and some of the other characters. Why didn't they grasp hold after a while as to what Jesse was? Were they just too trusting or just not taking the time to think about it all? After a few lies, the truth usually starts staring you in the face. I'm sure the basis of the book is that the reader watches Jesse take hold of his life and be a man. I wish there had been a few characters that took his lying and his bad childish habits more seriously and reached out to him. Perhaps he had used all his friends, UP!
I received a copy of this book from the author and voluntarily decided to review it.
