In fact, I would say forgettable since he has obviously got over her quickly enough. She seems like a rebound or 2nd best option. Why did he move to New York for Claire but not Lark? He moved to New York for a whole year and never looked her up. Doesn’t sound like she made as much of an impression on him as he did her. These glaring issues were never addressed. Most importantly, if Claire had not asked for a break, would Sam have chosen Lark? Probably not. I get the sense he kind of drifted into an opportunity rather than make a conscious choice. I hate when women treated like forgone conclusions. Lark deserves better.
OMG KA Linde has done it again. By again I mean I think she will have topped my favorite book collection of hers with this series. I fell madly in love with Sam and Lark. Lark is determined to live her life the way she sees fit and not the way her parents would rather her do. KA Linde doesn’t write weak women; she writes strong women who can hold their own and don’t back down. I didn’t realize how much I missed her writing until I read this book.
So, I finished this book while getting IV treatment for my Flu diagnosis. I planned my first true meal to eat with be a juicy burger and yummy fries. Don’t read this book on diet. There are lots of discussions at “Buns”.
Larkin St. Vincent aka Lark had spent a year in Madison working with a politician. She met southern Sam Rutherford and enjoyed a year-long relationship until it ended. Now fast forward 5 years and Lark is now the campaign manager and Sam the new lawyer hired on to help. Lark is the heiress to St Vincent’s Resorts and St Vincent Handbag line. She has grown up on the Upper Eastside and went against her parents' wishes and followed her heart to work in campaigns.
Sam didn’t know he would see Lark again. He thought she would head back to NYC and work for her family's company, St Vincent’s Resorts like she originally said she would be doing. They had history 5 years ago and are now back working alongside each other. Sam moved to New York with his girlfriend Claire. Sam hasn’t told Claire the whole truth. He told her he dated a campaign person while in Madison. Claire does know that Sam has worked with Lark in the past, but hasn’t put together that she is the who was with.
Lark doesn’t know how she is going to be able to hide her true feelings for Sam for the next 6 months, but she will do her best. Sam goes home to find Claire packed to go on her 3-month long orchestra job in Europe. However, she leaves telling Sam that they need to take a break. Will Sam rebound with Lark only to break her heart again? Will Lark give Sam a second chance after learning what really tore them apart all those many years ago?
This is not my first rodeo reading a KA Linde book and I was not disappointed one bit. I am over the moon excited for Court’s book. I truly want to see him find happiness again. I also can’t wait to see what happens with Camden. I would highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone who believes in second chances and wants a glimpse of an Upper Eastside New York life.
Larkin is an amazing character, she’s passionate about helping people she respects get elected and she’s a deputy campaign manager trying to get Mayor Kensington reelected. She works like crazy even though her family is very wealthy and she could have chosen a different life, an easier life that her controlling family wanted her to be living but that couldn’t be further from what she wants. She treats her friends like family and she’s been burned before when it comes to love. Including by Sam. They had a relationship 5 years ago that didn’t end well. So, Lark is blindsided when she learns that Sam is now an attorney and he has been hired to work in the legal department. Sam is blindsided too since he always thought Lark would be working for her parents in their multibilion-dollar company. Now, they have to see each other every day…
I loved Lark’s gang! They are the funniest, most dysfunctional gang EVER but their friendship certainly shines through, I laughed a lot in the moments they were together and there were a LOT of intense moments. I really liked Lark and Sam together, there’s a lot of chemistry there but also a lot of misunderstandings and not so perfect moments that weighted between them. There were a moment or two when I was actually thinking they weren’t very good to each other in the past which made me doubt a little about that second chance, but K. A. Linde didn’t need much time to change my mind. I definitely enjoyed their story however I do feel there were a lot of “upper east side type of people” mentions in a depreciative way, I kind of get where Lark was coming from but it still felt a bit much at times. Still, I’m addicted to this Upper East Side world and I really, really NEED to read English and Court’s story (so, so, so intense together!) and I can’t wait to get my hands on Katherine and Camden’s story too!

Lark hasn’t had the easiest life, and she has her moments in this book but she’s flawed and that for me is a sign of good character development. I like her sassiness and her determination to be the best she can be. She is striving for more than she has because she knows she is worth it and that she can do it.
Sam, oh my Sam. He’s sweet, loyal and oh so perfect for Lark. They’ve known each other for a long time and their connection is real. Lark does her best to avoid him but the universe has different plans for these two, I loved seeing them together and I’m glad I read it. I’m looking forward to Court and English’s book next.
