He laughed when I said I bought a Lyman book. However after about 8000rnds reloaded I've found it is the most extensive I've seen, and I have purchased a few different ones (Sierra, the "One Caliber, One Book", etc..), and the Lyman has all the same info plus some extra stuff. I use the following info for reloading; first I get the load data off the powder manufacturer web sites, look at my Lyman book, and one other source, then make a load decision, and I have to say time after time the Lyman seems to be the same if not a little on the safer side as all the other forms of info. Great book..

As the owner of the largest handloading listserve on the web (handloading@yahoogroups.com), I decided to take a poll of the list on which reloading manual was the best for a beginner. The Lyman manual won, hands down.

Lyman does all their testing independently since they do not manufacture either powder or bullets. You'll find a cross-section of bullets and powders from various manufacturers, and there are reduced loads listed with many of the bullets tested. (As for the review complaining about no data for his particular rifle...this was a statement made in ignorance...no company tests loads for individual guns...that's why there's SAAMI and standardized chambers, pressures, etc.)

The explanatory material at the front of the manual is where it really shines. They cover the basics of reloading in a systematic manner and answer most any question a beginner could come up with. They cover a variety of types of equipment and methods for preparing brass and accomplishing the task. When a new reloader joins our list, they are always referred to the Lyman manual, and universally they come back saying that their questions were answered!

There are dozens of manuals available, and most all of them are good. But you won't find a better 'first' manual than the Lyman.

If you could only own one reloading manual, this is the one to have. I have been reloading for a little over two years and just recently purchased this manual. The Lyman #48 was the most recommended manual when I started, but it was already getting a little dated so I decided to wait for the next version. Boy I wish the Lyman manual was the first manual I purchased! I own three other reloading manuals which I have read quite extensively, some of which I have particularly liked too (Hornady #7). The Lyman #49 however, has quickly become my favorite as it is the most informative, detailed, and instructive when it comes to the do's and dont's of reloading. It also has extensive load data that lists a wide variety of manufacturers bullet styles and weights.

As for the previous poster, with all the different gun makers and models over many years of making guns it's RARE when the book has the exact same gun in the exact same configuration as you. Good luck on your hunt for a better manual, but you wont find one.

Great book for reloading. The first 120 pages are a great reference with info for the beginner as well as a refresher for those of us who have been away for a while. The next 330 pages are reloading data for current cartridges as well as some classics. My fav is the .30-06 with 4 pages of data - same with the .308 / 7.62 x 51mm (7.62 nato) military load. Please read the warnings !!! This can 'hobby' be hazardous to your health. Common sense is stressed repeatedly in the text.

This Lyman reloading handbook came with my new progressive reloader and is a a great guide for those looking for information on the reloading process and current reloading data.

The book first takes you through the reloading process, explains all of the components and terminology, and clearly highlights the most important parts and steps. All of the instructions are very easy to understand and there are many helpful black and white photos to illustrate points. The main section includes the specifics for each caliber, including the history and details of the cartridge (actually very interesting) and tables showing test results using various manufacture's powder and different weight bullets, with the most accurate load shown in "bold".

We also have The ABCs of Reloading: The Definitive Guide for Novice to Expert (ABC's of Reloading), which is a very informative guide as well.

Highly Recommended!

I have purchased Lyman manuals for over 50 years... they are not in the powder or bullet making business so I feel their data is unbiased. They did NOT put some of the popular powder loads for pistols in this manual which was a little disheartening. I have reloaded for over 55 years and trusted the data I have found in all of the Lyman books. This particular book... even though I have a number of years of experience.... I read it from the beginning as a refresher... actually found new information I was not aware of... so ... a good book... even for experienced reloaders to read right from the front to the back.

Terrific general reloading info in the front of the book. The reloading data, however, could be a lot more complete...The powder selection for each table is pretty good, but the data for the different *kinds* of bullets are wanting. For example, I'm reloading with Berry's 124gr round-nose plated bullets for the 9mm Luger cartridge, but it only has jacket hollow-point for 125gr. So, I had to go elsewhere for more relevant data ( handloads.com , reloadammo.com , thefiringline.com , thehighroad.org, etc.) I understand that, if Lyman had included *everything*, the book would be monstrous and costly. Then, maybe, with the purchase of the book, the publisher should allow access to some massive, more complete database that's online?? Hint, hint....
