The M-Audio Keystation 49 II is a simple, powerful MIDI controller designed for sequencing music and playing virtual instruments on your Mac or PC.
It features 49 full-size, velocity-sensitive keys and a series of controls that broaden the range of playable notes, expand expressive capabilities, and enhance your recording workflow. Octave-range buttons; pitch-bend and modulation wheels; and transport and directional controls make it easy to play, perform, and record in your music software without using a mouse or track pad.
Keystation 49 II also includes a 1/4” sustain-pedal input that lets you use an external control pedal, such as M-Audio’s SP2, for genuine piano sustain.
To get you started composing, we bundled the Keystation 49 II with a premium virtual instrument from SONiVOX. SONiVOX’s Eighty-Eight Ensemble is a world-class piano instrument that captures a 9-foot CD327 Steinway piano's sound. Finally, we included Ableton Live Lite — one of the world's most popular performance and production programs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the M-Audio Keystation require a power supply?
No. The M-Audio Keystation series controller is USB hub-powered, meaning that it is powered directly by the computer USB port when connected with a USB-A to USB-B cable.
Do I need to install any drivers to use my Keystation series controller?
No! The M-Audio Keystation series controller is a class-compliant device, meaning that it is plug-and-play and does not require any drivers to be installed. This also means that it will work with and is supported on the latest operating systems, including Windows 8 and Mac 10.9.
Will the Keystation work with my Windows 8 and Mac 10.9 Mavericks computer?
Yes! The M-Audio Keystation series controller is a class-compliant device, meaning that it is plug-and-play and does not require any drivers to be installed. This also means that it will work and is supported on the latest operating systems, including Windows 8 and Mac 10.9.
Will the Keystation work with my iPad?
Yes! To use the M-Audio Keystation Mini 32 with your iPad, connect it to the iPad using the iPad Camera Connection kit (sold separately) which enabling you to perform and compose with audio apps on your iPad and other iOS devices.
How do I reset the controller to the factory default settings?
To set the Keystation series controller to its factory default settings, follow the steps suggested below:
- Power Off the Keystation.
- Hold down the buttons ADVANCED, OCT+, and OCT- simultaneously, until step 4.
- Power On the Keystation.
- Release the three buttons.
The Keystation is now set back to the factory default settings.
My sustain pedal is reversed and functioning backwards. What do I do?
The sustain pedal input on the rear of the Keystation series controller accepts any standard momentary, non-latching footswitch (sold separately). When pressed, this pedal will sustain the sound you are playing without having to keep your fingers pressing down the keys.
The Polarity of the sustain pedal is determined by the keyboard upon startup. When the Keystation is powering up, the sustain pedal is assumed to be in the Up (Off) position. It is important that the sustain pedal is not pressed during startup, otherwise the pedal will reverse its operation, and notes will sustain when the pedal is not pressed.
To reverse the polarity, simply power off the Keystation series controller, ensure that the pedal is not depressed, and power the unit on.
My Keystation is not reading in my computer. Why not?
Most likely this is not due to the actual Keystation itself and is more likely something to do with the connection, a conflict with something else in the computer, or software settings. We recommend following the steps suggested below to determine the cause:
- Try connecting to a different USB port.
- Try connecting with an alternate USB cable.
- Try connecting to a different computer to determine if the cause is hardware or computer-related.
If you continue to experience difficulty after walking through the steps suggested above, you may want to consider contacting M-Audio Technical Support for further technical assistance.

PS: for all those that's not familiar with a midi controller, here's a little info, midi-controllers are not keyboard, they do not produce sound on their own, it is like a game controller, it only works when you plug it into a game console then it controls the characters inside the game, same as a midi-controller, it functions by plugging it into a computer and it controls virtual instruments inside a daw system(such as garageband if you use mac, there are LOTS of different daw system you can choose, and millions of virtual instrument presets, which M-audio provides you with 1 daw system for pc-ableton live, and 2 virtual instrument present-Xpand and Sonivox so you don't have to go out and buy your own right off the bat since they can get costly), you can't connect a speaker to this directly, just like how you can't connect a speaker to a game controller, everything goes into and out of your computer, so that's just some basic infos regarding midi-controller, hopefully it answers some of you guys confusion about what exactly key station 88 is and do.
In my case, I was looking for this for a long time. I have an oldie but goldie Yamaha SW1000XG with a PLG-150DX attached to a Yamaha DS2416 in a Magma PCI to ExpressCard interface setup. This is a retro-90s type of setup but I love the sounds. Well, my child started piano lessons and the good pianos are not less than $700 and beyond. So it seemed pretty obvious to buy a MIDI controller keyboard and put it to work with my PC-hardware-based synths. Now my son can practice his piano lessons AND, as a bonus, I get to play and teach him a little bit of MIDI and multi-track recording. The product is not bad quality, the keys respond very well to velocity, and the semi-weighted effect does not feel cheap, although is not the feel you would have in a more expensive piano. I will update this review for others to read about my experience but, unlike others that said very negative things about this product, it seems that it will not disappoint. Just make sure you understand that this is a MIDI controller and you need software and hardware to use it and enjoy its features.
I was debating the full 88 key version of this, but I'm certainly glad I didn't because the 49 key is a pretty big dude. It's almost as wide as my entire desk. It's got enough keys to not have to jump an octave on any of the drum kits, which was my main goal.
Pro tip: The Rain Design mStand Laptop Stand, Silver (Patented) is fantastic and sturdy and will hold your laptop directly above it as pictured.

You can even place your iPad to the left of the keyboard and use it as a lower octave. Not perfect, but it works pretty well.
I particularly like that it is USB powered so I don’t need any extra adapters or chords.
I know some other users have reported a delay between hitting a key and the sound coming out, but mine is perfect. I’m using it with a 9.7 inch iPad Pro so I’m guessing the processor is plenty powerful enough so there’s no lag.
Also, the weight of this is amazingly light. I can barely tell when I have it in my backpack.
Overall this is definitely a five-star item and I totally recommend it.
