The first time I plugged this into my Windows PC and started recording with a set of Sennheiser mics and Reaper 64 bit the sound was strange. The levels were not where I would expect and the background noise was unacceptable. It just seemed sucky! Sadness.

I've had M-Audio equipment for years and figured it can't be that bad. Maybe something wasn't right. After a while, I found this to be true.

In short, Windows 7 seems to have a weird way of dealing with this interface. If you are having the adjust the gain on your M-TRACK way down or in some kind of convoluted way, check your Windows recording settings. For example, I found that I had to turn down the input level to 5% and then everything was beautiful. At this point the noise was not noticeable. I did not have to introduce a separate pre-amp (one could be used if you're really particular but the sound from the M-TRACK was VERY workable).

I also found that if you try to hook up a sound board to the M-TRACK and use the M-TRACK output to feed into the board and then use the M-TRACK input to record what you are doing (e.g. recording a podcast where you both play pre-recorded content and speak all with only one computer) you'll want to pay close attention to the "Monitor Mix" knob. Turn it all the way over to "USB" and use your board's headphone jack to monitor your audio. If you don't you'll get some phasing that is so bad it will sound like horrible picket fencing. Proper use of that know will get you really nice solid results.

I found the perfect complement to this device is a set of two shorter (e.g. 10') XLR cables for mics and a set of four short (e.g. 3'-5') TSR cables for connecting to a board. With that, there is a lot of work you can do with this little beast.

Pros: small, light, simple, flexible, easy to use, inexpensive
Cons: Pre-amp is too weak. I have to crank the gain to get a decent level with condenser mics and I can't get dynamic mics to work at all with this unit. Then with the gain way up, there is a lot of noise.
I've only used this with mics plugged into the XLR jack; I haven't used the 1/4 in jacks at all (don't play guitar). Haven't tried the MIDI input either.
I use this with a Macbook Pro running 10.6.8 and GarageBand. Simple to set up, just plug it in and in GarageBand preferences select M-Track as the input and output. Plug your headphones into the headphone jack on the M-Track and you're good to go. You can record mono or stereo as needed (you need to enable multi-track recording in GarageBand if you want to record two sources at once or in stereo).
Bottom line: Well I didn't want to spend much money and I got a product that is workable but not great. If you're serious about your sound then maybe you want to get something better.

I have always been a M-Audio fan. I have the Fast Track and became really excited when they announced the M-Track in January. When it comes to new electronics, I hardly ever buy the products until the reviews come in from actual users, but this product was pretty much exactly what I needed for my recording purposes whether it be Singing, Speaking, or playing a musical instrument.

With the fast track, It has two ports: A microphone, and a Guitar port. This is great if you are singing and playing guitar, but as soon as you have two microphones, or two instruments. You have to record them at separate times. This can become a hassle really quickly as I started composing and recording my music. The M-Track solves this by having both a XLR and a Guitar 1/4 in plug for both channels. You can plug your devices in, play them at the same time, and easily record two of the same types of tracks easily.

The added control knobs also make it really easy to control and get the levels you want. There is not a master level for the entire mixer that includes both the monitor jacks and the head phone jack, but this actually makes me enjoy it more. I can turn up or down the level of the monitor while still having the exact same level on the Headphones. It is probably one of my favorite features amazingly.

When it comes to connecting the device to a computer, the M-Track does not require any drivers. It is plug and play for both Mac OSX and Windows. I personally use a mac, and it integrates seamlessly into Logic and Garage Band. If you use the M-Track as your default Audio Output, you can even mix the audio and say exactly how much of a monitor you want to have with the microphones connected to it.

I bought this in order to record vocals and guitar on my laptop. I have had fancier boxes, but this one promised to deliver what I needed. It does deliver what I was looking for.

There is a right and left channel. There is also a mono channel where both channels are recorded no matter which side you plug a guitar or mic into. With right and left Stereo, whatever is plugged in the Left side is recorded on the left side. And vice versa.

Some things I wish I knew about the unit before I bought it:
-- The 1/4" plugs you see are for GUITAR only. You can't plug a 1/4" mic cable into any of them and expect it to work.
-- The mic only uses the XLR MALE plug found on most microphones that don't use the 1/4" plug.
-- You can purchase an adapter on Amazon to go from the XLR to 1/4". It is called: Hosa GXJ235 1/4 TRS To XLR Male Adaptor.
-- The 1/4" headphone jack can be adapted to 1/8" headphones with another adapter. It is called: Hosa GPM-103 3.5mm TRS to 1/4" TRS Adaptor
-- The left and right speaker outs on the back are 1/4" as well. I bought an adapter called: Hosa YMP-434 Female TRS 1/8-Inch to Dual Male TS 1/4-Inch Stereo Breakout Cable to adapt the two 1/4" outs to a 1/8" stereo female. That way I can plug my digital speaker system into it as monitor.

Some things I really like about this box:
-- Clean sound. I was afraid the sound would not be on par with more expensive units. But I was rewarded with clean sound, no pops or hiss introduced into my recordings.
-- Compact interface. They could have spread things out more, but then it would not be so compact. I only have so much space on my desk and this fits in very well.
-- Jacks are located on top, for easy access.
