The M-Audio SuperDAC is a solid, attractive DAC with a good feature set. I really liked the way it sounded from the moment I first switched it on. But there's a lot of competition at this price level, with companies trying to distinguish themselves not just on sound quality and features but on design and how the user experiences the device.

DAC CHIP: The SuperDAC uses one Wolfson WM8740 SEDS chip. This DAC/ADC chip has been around for some time, and is well regarded.

DESIGN AND BUILD QUALITY: The Super DAC seems fairly well-built and attractively designed. The switches and connectors seem solid. It looks better in person than in the pictures, for some reason. The Super DAC is 3-1/2 inches wide, 4 inches deep (including the switches on the front and the connectors on the back, but not including room for the connected cables); and just over 1-5/8" high including the volume control. The volume control has about 40 steps; it's functional but not especially nice to use.

PACKAGE CONTENTS: Besides the Super DAC, the package includes a USB-to-Mini-USB cable; an RCA cable; and the user guide. The cables are somewhat basic but will get you connected.

POWER SUPPLY NOT INCLUDED: I can understand somewhat why M-Audio didn't include a power supply. It would have added to the production cost, and there's a real question as to whether most people would actually use a power supply. Computer users can draw power from a USB port. High-end audiophiles would no doubt be skeptical and upgrade the power supply. However, on balance and at this price it would have been nice to have a power supply included. M-Audio can source a power supply much more easily than we can.

I am extremely impressed with this DAC. I was looking for an external "sound card" and after trying a couple from another big brand, I decided to go with this DAC instead. Installation was brainless and the sound quality from this thing is truly incredible. It also has a very high quality headphone amp. I have it hooked up to my M- Audio AV-40 monitors and it's a great combo. I've had this on my Wish List for a little while now, but one day last week the price dropped down to $93.95. I have no idea why, but I jumped on it. The package also came with a high quality RCA to RCA cable, which I wasn't expecting. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this item. Compact, very well built, and sound quality is some of the best I've heard.

Sound quality is ok. Much better than my Dell but not as good as my Apogee Groove. There are other DAC/Amps in this price range that are better.

The multiple outputs and the big knob are handy though.

The is absolutely the best USB DAC I have ever used and I have tried MANY of them. The ONLY thing M-Audio could do differently is include the drivers. I personally don't have an issue with downloading them and it is actually my preferred method, but I could see where on a consumer grade product they should be included in some way.

The sound in amazing with my Sennheiser HD598 headphones and I love being able to have the optical out as well to power my Logitech 5.1 Surround setup. Up to this point I had been using a Soundblaster Omni 5.1, which I was quite pleased with, but I really felt that the Logitech drivers were "muddying" up the sound. I was correct. The Super DAC gives me a crystal clear audio signal and has fully met my expectations and gone beyond.

Construction feels fairly solid overall, with gold plated connectors everywhere, but the volume control feels a little flimsy. Sometimes it rubs a little on the case surrounding it if applying pressure off-center on the knob.

When powered through the USB connection, extremely large impulses (pops) can be heard when the USB power is applied or lost (eg. when restarting, starting, or shutting down the connected computer). They appear both on the headphone ouput and the RCA analog speaker output. I rarely restart the computer it's connected to so not a big deal, but something to be aware of. I suspect using the optional dedicated power supply input would resolve the issue, but I haven't tried it. It doesn't come with a power supply, but anything with a 12V output and the proper connector should work.

Overall the sound quality is great, and the built-in headphone amp is powerful enough to drive my 250-ohm beyerdynamic DT880s. The driver is unobtrusive (no required crapware) and seems to be bug-free from what I can tell.

I bought this for my Mac Mini so I had a headphone jack that was easy to use as well as increasing the quality of sound. These did that and then some. The sound quality was excellent, I was very happy with the sound quality. The knob is only used for the volume of the headphones. I have this hooked up to my 5.1 Surround sound receiver to increase sound quality running to the receiver. All around great product and I would buy it again.

When it comes to sound quality and technology, there is a huge disparity in the sound quality we can now deliver and technology's ability to deliver it. That is one of the reasons I feel like people still accept subpar to average sound quality, because they have not heard any difference when between low quality audio and LOSSY or FLAC.

With something like this, a person can enjoy a better quality sound, and they can demand a higher standard. Remember, too, that a lot of things impact sound quality. File type, conversion, player, what you are listening with including not only headphones but also cords, and so on. If you think about tracing the process from origin to your ears, it helps to give you the best sound available.

With regard to the converter, this uses the Wolfson WM8740. This has been around for a little while now and is in some good mid-range DACs out there. Now, there are better out there, but the price range determination that comes with that statement can sometimes be daunting. That is one of the reasons I took to this, and I have been pleased with this enough to have a couple of them in different places (work use included). This allows for a 24-bit/192kHz high-definition audio conversion over a USB 2.0 connection.

As far as design goes, this is very easy to understand. I like that about it because any level of user can pick up something like this and toy around with it, and they can decide what rate you want to performance at. Now, remember to read up about the program you want and included drivers, which is again a good thing. I like that this does not try to shove a bunch of useless stuff on you and make you try to use it, because those things rarely work out well, if at all.
