Within 10 minutes of browsing through this book, I knew I had found what I was looking for. The book was laid out in a LOGICAL manner, well designed for a new Garand owner. He discusses the history. Enough to give the reader a good background, not so much to bore them to tears. He then discusses maintenance. While he draws from other sources, the line drawings are EXCELLENT, and much better move than blurry black and white photographs! He provides a list that says exactly what materials you need to own to properly clean and maintain M1. He goes into detail about the process. I wish he would have had a picture showing grease points, but he does give you a clear list telling you exactly what needs to be greased. He has complete dis-assembly and assembly directions. He has information for sighting in the rifle, info about this sights and various other parts (including some distinctions between early and late war models, and Winchester vs. SA differences. This book was perfect for what I was looking for. It does not give the reader a detailed guide to determining origin of minor parts but as I recall, he acknowledges that and refers the reader to a different text. This book is not for the person wishing to explore the originality of their rifle and the intricacies of the parts. It is exactly what it says, "an OWNERS GUIDE" but it goes way beyond your typical owners guide, including production dates numbers, etc. An appendix in the back provides helpful resources also.
Well worth the money, and exactly what you will need to get started.
They book is laid out in a clear and logical manner that is easy to understand even for someone who is completely unfamiliar with the M1 (but not firearms).
EVERYTHING THAT A FIRST TIME OWNER NEEDS TO KNOW IS IN THIS BOOK. I highly recommend it.
So descriptive, the effort put into the book misses the mark as a definitive owner's manual.
I also have a problem with some of the organization. Field stripping isn't covered, just beyond depot-level disassembly. In practice, you'd just want to separate the stock, trigger group, and barrel/receiver assembly from each other for 90% of what you'd want to accomplish. Show that much, then break each of those down further. I think the _M1 Carbine Owner's Guide_ is better in this regard.
It's also kind of funny that the text warns us against reloading ammunition for the M1, but the author's biographical blurb says he has "over 10 years experience...reloading for the M1 rifle."
That stuff aside, it's a good and useful book, probably enough for most owners to get by with. Volume 2, _The M1 Garand Complete Assembly Guide_, has better pictures and diagrams. It doesn't have the short section on lubrication, or dealing with malfunctions. For that, go back to Vol 1.
The exploded drawings weren't very helpful either. They might be good for a gunsmith but they don't help the owner to enjoy shooting a Garand. If you want to know how to shoot and maintain your Garand, look for the vintage training films on youtube.
