A Breathtaking Anime with an Interesting Story that Might be the Best Show this Season
I will update this review as the season goes on, but from what I have seen so far, I can already tell this will be AnimeOfTheSeason. From the gorgeous backgrounds, to the unique and breathtaking animation and character models, to the stellar soundtrack, this show does not disappoint, and that does not even take into account the story! In that regard, I am eagerly waiting every Friday for new episodes and can't wait to see where the story goes. From what I have heard in the manga (which I have not read but supposedly it is very good), this beginning will be one of the few times when it is this cheerful. Apparently sh*t is going to hit the fan and this series will be turning rather dark in the future, which only makes me more interested!

Anyways, regardless of Anime Strike's faulty payment structure, their HD streaming is top notch and certainly does this anime justice. Hopefully Amazon will advertise this show more, since I can see it being the Dark Horse of the season that no one is noticing. Check it out!

Edit: Now that the series is over, I wanted to mention that while at first I was giving the series a 9/10, after I watched the final episode, I cannot give it any lower than a 10/10. It certainly does get gruesome at some points in case anyone is concerned, but it really is not that bad. MiA was probably my favorite anime of all of 2017, and I am so glad Anime Strike is gone. I plan to purchase the US blurays as soon as the preorder shows up, and cannot wait until the series is continued. The first volume of the manga [[ASIN:1626927731 Made in Abyss Vol. 1]] just came out, which I have gotten, so consider checking it out!

A brilliantly crafted adventure for those who want more from there entertainment.

I have seen nearly 900 anime series within the last decade. I watch over a hundred series within a single year on a regular basis, and I'm here to tell you that I have seen less than 5 series among all of those hundreds that has impacted me, and affected me, on such an incredibly intimate level. This series is truly setting itself up to be an all time classic. All it needs now is a sequel so we can get to the real bottom of this narrative both in the literal sense and in the thematic sense. Highly recommended for fans of coming of age adventures, fantasy, shows featuring children growing and developing emotionally and intellectually, and anyone who just likes a damn good story. Let this series take you on a journey through its lush, beautifully depicted world, all while Kevin Penkin's immaculate original soundtrack fills you with the most appropriate sense of wonder.. and at times fear, anger, mind-numbing sorrow, and unease. It's hard to describe the tone of this series, ultimately. It balances between beautiful, fantastical adventure, and near horror, and debilitating oppressive sadness, but never does it feel incongruous. It is a masterfully directed, written, animated, scored, and produced series. Of the likes that we are lucky to see once every 5 years.

Made in Abyss encompasses everything I love about anime. It's beautiful, with a fascinating world, a wonderful sense of adventure and well-realized, fun characters. It's the main reason I subscribed to Anime Strike and I have not been disappointed. I give Made in Abyss my highest recommendation.

The art is beautiful, the characters endearing
Verified purchase
I don't usually write reviews, but this was an exceptional show that certainly merits one. The art is beautiful, the characters endearing, the world-building wonderful. This is a show of relationships and the emotions that go with them. Given its popularity, I can only hope there'll be more seasons to come, but for now I'm happy that it at least tells one story arc with a sense of completion. The pacing is appropriately slow, and yet there is no filler. Some episodes were very difficult for me to watch due to their emotional impact. Overall it was excellent. Highly recommended.

Next episode PLEASE! Amazing!

Give this a try and you will not be disappointed. Don't assume based off the first few episodes that this is a cheerful kids show. It is adorably optimistic and naïve but that just draws you into a darker, twisted direction later. I love the art and music. I look forward to every Friday because of this show. This show will make you feel hopeful, sad and interested throughout.

The Profound World and Core of Made In Abyss
Verified purchase
All things come with a cost, searching for the "Truth" is the most taxing of all pursuits. You never know when you're in her favor. For all you know, perhaps, you've been pursuing shadows, in search of meaning which was never there to begin with, mere delusions. The abyss embody's the unknown, enrapturing all who gaze at its bountiful treasures and untouched world, ripe for the taking. It elicits a primal calling to those that direct their attention towards it, tapping into a drive common to all humans, the pursuit of understanding. And as the main character, Riko, grew up in an orphanage on the periphery of the Abyss, it quickly consumed her intrigue, inciting a longing for understanding and adventure, of what lies at the bottom of the Abyss, the joy of exploring the unexplored, and discovering the fate of her mother.

Upon meeting Reg, they quickly strike up a friendship, and soon set out on Riko's long awaited journey, to descend all the way to the bottom of the Abyss. Fascinating landscapes await them with each turn, peppered with mystical creatures, each incredibly unique and splendidly brought to life by the shows gorgeous animation. As we witness Riko and Reg's perilous journey, their earnest desire to discover what remains to be unknown becomes our own, forging an emotional bond between the viewer and the characters that makes us experience the same pain that they do. But, in return, their triumphs are that much more fulfilling.

Don't pass up on watching Made in Abyss, its a fabulous story and does so many things right that it would be a shame to not experience it.

Refreshing, Inspiring, Adventurous
Verified purchase
Have you ever watched or read a story that upon finishing, you just had to say "Wow...". This visuals, the animation, but even more importantly the character, their development and story, felt ever so refreshing and new. It was a show that personally made me think, caused me to feel, and has "caved" a hole that is craving for more. It does take some time to move into the actual abyss, but I felt that this was a good move as it gave myself some time to really understand the characters and their ideals. From then on out as you descend with the main characters, the story picks up, the world broadens, and the adventure feels ever so real as our characters meet, but even more importantly say goodbye to old and new friends. I will agree with other reviews though. This show may look like it is childish due to its art style and general description of the story; but in reality the world they proceed through is very indifferent and quite unforgiving of the characters. Quite literally, you will descend into a progressively darker story than where you started on the surface.

Made in Abyss: Not you average Anime!
Verified purchase
I read the manga first, so I knew what was coming. And what I saw was as good as the manga! They added some extra elements and scenes to the story that I have no problem with. I cannot wait until the next season or even the next volume of the manga!

And yes, despite the moe appearance of cute and kawaii characters, this is NOT a KIDS anime series. A lot of stuff happens in this series that children under 12 shouldn't see, and older kids should only see with an adult present to help explain things. (Though I imagine that some adults would be at a loss as well.)
