Motor oil is made from crude oil and is used to lubricate, clean, and cool engines. Types of motor oil include conventional, synthetic, diesel, bio-based, hybrid (blends of conventional and synthetic), and recycled oils. Motor oil varies in weight and viscosity, as well as additives that some manufacturers add to the oil during the refining process. A numerical code system created by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) grades motor oils according to viscosity--the higher the number between 0 and 60, the more viscous (thicker) the oil is. Most consumer motor oils are graded by two numbers, with the first number indicating cold weather (Winter or "W") performance.

SAE 0W-20

This oil has a weight of SAE 0W-20, meaning it has an SAE viscosity rating of 0 in cold temperatures and a rating of 20 at normal operating temperature. Always check your vehicle's owner's manual to verify that this is the correct weight of motor oil for your vehicle.

Full Synthetic Oil

This oil is a full synthetic oil, meaning crude oil is not used in making it. Synthetic oil can be used in vehicle engines instead of motor oils refined from crude oil, and often provides superior mechanical performance over traditional motor oil, including increased gas mileage and reduced engine wear at extreme temperatures. Its complex method of production means it can often cost more than conventional motor oil.

Excellent Oil

It's very hard for the average consumer to judge the quality of a motor oil. Since oil is specified by the car manufacturers to meet minimum API specifications, just about any oil - conventional or synthetic - which meets the manufactures spec's will work. Now it is a fact that conventional oils break down faster and don't have the lubricity of a synthetic so I would go with a synthetic. But which one? Here again the API spec's dictate that synthetics are very closely matched in performance. The marketing guys will spout that their oil has this additive or that which makes it better. And it's possible that under extreme racing conditions one oil will be better than another. But even here, how many different brands of oils are used in Nascar and Grand Prix race cars? If one were better than another I would imagine all the race teams would jump on the "best". So I've used MAG1 oil in all my vehicles and it performs just as well as the Mobil 1 or Eneos oil I've used. In fact, maybe a bit better in regards to increased mileage. I had a 1.3MPG improvement when I switched from Mobil 1 to Eneos (which btw is made by Nippon Petroleum). From there I switched to MAG1 and saw a few 10ths MPG improvement. So using the MAG1 over Mobil 1 there was quite a bit of MPG improvement. I can easily go 10K miles in my Camry before an oil change. And I could probably go further but I have no objective way to measure oil breakdown or engine wear. So based on all of this I will continue to use MAG1. Check out their website and you'll see they know what they're doing. And a bonus is that it is quite a bit less expensive than any other oil.

4-5 stars. This is my first experience using this oil in our new 2014 Forester. It was our first oil change at 3000 miles, so it still too early to tell for sure. No hot weather experience yet. So far it seems to be a good lubricant and seems to be standing up to the cold starts we have been experiencing lately. Temps. overnight have been in the teens so morning starts have been cold, but this oil seems to be performing well. I am planning to stay with it unless it gives me a reason to change to another.

I finally decided to change my own oil and in particular, oil with a viscosity of 0w20 for my 2010 Toyota with the 2tr-fe engine. It worked great, but I might buy two boxes next time since the capacity was 1/10 more than supplied under ideal circumstances. I used this oil with a K&N oil filter and toyota-approved drain gasket (which I found to be nonexistent` from my previous oil changes at the dealer) all these worked well and installation was easy.

Although I have driven around 2,000 miles, my mpg has suffered and I do not know if it's due to the oil, or the lack of enough oil. Dip stick says its sufficient, so we'll see.

Other than these issues, the oil is a great buy considering the other 0w20 brands on the market. Give it a try since you can always change it out.

While I love MAG1's conventional oil, this synthetic version did not work well for me. I have been using their conventional oil in a couple of my civics for several years, and no issues ever. I tried this Synthetic version in my Lexus recently, and I was surprised to see that I lost about half quart of oil in just 500 miles. I had no leaks of any kind. Half quart were just gone. Therefore, I immediately drained the oil and refilled with my usual brand of synthetic oil (I won't say which, because this is not about them), and zero oil loss after 2000 miles. Needless to say, I won't be using this oil ever again.

If you buy 5 cases and don't need to add between changes you will get 1 "free" change; provided your car takes 5 qts or less to change. I noticed a slight mpg drop (.5 mpg) the day I changed out the old M1 advanced fuel economy 0w-20 i had been using. It's been 5k on the change and I had to add about a 1/3 qt which I never needed to before. The bottles are clear as shown but lack the oz marks on the side that make it so easy to determine how much oil you have added. I likely will go back to M1 Advanced fuel economy oil at the next change.

Great full synthetic at a great price

Fantastic full synthetic at a great price. I've been using this in other weights for long enough to know that it performs well. It was only normal to start using this in my '10 RAV4 as well. It's only got about a thousand miles on this oil, but all is the same as with the other MAG1 oils I've used.

While a full synthetic for a standard passenger vehicle might be overkill, this one is affordable enough to use it. While it may allow for a considerably longer interval between changes, I won't press my luck (the car is still under warranty, so the factory interval has to be followed anyway).

With internal tolerances on new engines being so much tighter, I think it only makes sense to be mindful with these new oils with lower warm AND cold/startup viscosities. So 5W20 may not be drastically different from 5W30, but something like 0W20 is pushing in a new direction a bit. At least that is MY conclusion - for now.

And at the time I'm writing this, there aren't a lot of 0W20 choices that I'm aware of (keeping it to "standard" offerings, and not stuff like Redline/Royal Purple/etc.). So the MAG1 has appeal for that reason, too.

Mag1 comes with additives such as ZDDP that help protect your engine, many other oils do not come with significant quantities and although this oil is not the highest in concentration of ZDDP it is around 900 to 1000 and is of good quality. I would recommend this over Mobil 1 on value and quality. Mag1 is the private label brand of Warren, they are one of the largest and oldest motor oil companies in the business. For the price you cannot find a much better Full Synthetic motor oil.
