Make your own Dole Whip, write letters to cast members, and build a paper airplane to an elephant's proportions to learn science, language arts, and math skills. Need to supplement some world history or cultural study? Jodi gives lesson suggestions for each country in World Showcase at EPCOT. Use Expedition Everest to research some geography, or the Tree of Life to learn about animals. I bet you'll see your next Disney trip differently after you've seen the Tree of Life from Jane Goodall's point of view.
By no means is the Magical Mouse Schoolhouse a substitute for homeschooling curriculum. Instead, it's meant to be added to your shelf of resources to supplement or freshen up your lessons. I'm not a homeschooling mom, but with our family's love of Disney vacations, it's for sure something I enjoyed reading and doing some of the activities with my children. It worked well in our family because we have a huge Disney frame of reference.
I would suggest picking up this book and adding it to your resources of family fun! You'll learn something in the process and keep some of the Disney magic going in your home. You could also use it to create a countdown of fun facts for your upcoming Disney vacation. I guarantee you'll learn something from the Magical Mouse Schoolhouse!
Each chapter is written about a specific Walt Disney World attraction. A brief history of the attraction is given within the first half of every chapter, including some fun facts - my favorite part of the book! The second half of each chapter is called "Today's Takeaway" which suggests an assignment to complete, a family activity to do, or a recipe to make! "Magical Mouse Schoolhouse" can be used by families with kids of all ages! There are plenty of activities and lessons geared towards little ones - such as making your own fossils using play-doh or trying 3 different recipes to make bubbles. Older students can attempt assignments such as making your own 3D pictures (using photo editing software), or making your own motion powered generator. There really is something for everyone within this book!
This book is a must-have for any Disney fan, and allows you to re-live the magic while you're away from Walt Disney World - and learn something too!
It's always nice when a book is available on Kindle for instant download, but this one is better purchased in old-fashioned book form. Mine is already full of post-it notes and highlighter marks and will be a great resource for my Disney library. Thanks Jodi for a great book!
