I will use this as a "navigator's aid" while on trips. My Garmin and TomTom units aren't designed with the use of a navigator in mind, just a driver. My GPS units are great for telling me how to get somewhere, where the nearest food along my route is, etc. They are both terrible for letting my navigator just browse the map. This software with its drag and pinch interface lets her quickly scroll to an area, zoom in & out and generally explore.

I have a Kindle Fire HD which means NO built in GPS and NO network connection while driving. (Too cheap to sign up for one of those portable 3G hotspot units) So the offline part is critical to me and the GPS functionality isn't important to me.

The $5 is dirt cheap and a no-brainer to add to the $100 or so I have already spent on a standalone GPS unit. In fact, I just spent over $10 ordering a paper road atlas to toss in the glove box.

Since you download map data on a state by state basis (for the United States anyway) it doesn't use up a lot of storage for areas I don't care about.

For what I need it is a great little application.

(try the lite, consider the pro)
The version availale at the time of the original review (below) listed a few cons of the paid version which I believe are no longer an issue in the latest version. The developer has done a superb job of listening to the needs of it's users and for this alone derseves a bump in the rating. When I get some time I'll review the updated app and revise the review.

(stick with the lite version)
pros: the mapswithme is a great offline map app. the rendering and response of the map display is easy to read and browse. the map files dont take up too much space. its like having a really nice paper atlas on hand. cons: there isn't yet a way to manually save or bookmark a location. the search capability provided by the pro version doesn't seem to have a large enough POI database and it doesn't allow searching for a specific house or building number. advice: stick with the lite version until the searching improves in the pro version or bookmarks are implemented.

I love this app; it looks sparse when one first looks at it, but it has many features that make travel easier...and you can use it without internet or wi-fi connections, which make it great for being on the road. One can use the GPS feature to zero the map in to where you are, then the search feature to find restaurants, gas stations, atm machines and transportation access points. One can zoom as close as one wishes, or zoom out to find places nearby.

It takes very little to get used to it, and if you travel a lot, there are maps available for any place in the world. I couldn't recommend it more

Great replacement for traditional map when on the road away from WiFi and/or cell signal. Saved me from getting lost in foreign cities many times.

I bought this app for my Nexus 4 phone before traveling to Thailand. It it a terrific app that definitely enhanced my travel experience. I never leave reviews but am compelled to pay it forward with this one.

I've seen a lot of reviews complain that there isn't enough search functionality for specific addresses, or enough POI data for landmarks, or that it lacks turn-by-turn navigation. While all true, I don't think they are a downside. This app is not a replacement for Google Maps, but it is everything you could expect from a lightweight, completely offline GPS map application.

My main uses were:
- To find my way around cities (no, you don't really need turn-by-turn to figure out what direction to go)
- Confirm that the taxi driver is going where I want to go, or I got on the correct bus/train/boat (helpful in foreign countries where language is a barrier)
- Find hiking trails and beach entrances
- Find major landmarks / tourist attractions
- Know exactly when to get off public transit (train/bus/boat). This is super helpful. Don't have to be that person constantly checking the map and asking others "what stop is this?".

Features:

- Map data:

The map data is superb and FREE, from the openstreetmap.org project. I actually found hiking trails in Thailand that were not on Google Maps. It is NOT good for finding every business on the block, or searching a specific address, but I don't think that is a reasonable expectation for an offline map... This thing is able to pack an entire country in only 100MB (!!!), so it has the important features (roads, major landmarks, etc.), but not every coffee shop on the planet.

Installed & run on Kindle Fire HD, it seems stable & accurate. As a "stand-alone" map resource, it works. However, being such, it requires downloaded maps making it something of a memory hog. Font & bookmarks are WAY TOO tiny, making it hard to use/read while on the road. Interface isn't very intuitive, especially when trying to add bookmarks.

The Kindle Fire is not equipped with GPS and location sensors so this app doesn't work well as a navigation tool. I knew that from the start. For car navigation, I use my Garmin. I was looking for a stand-alone atlas and for that, this app serves well enough. Downloading maps only of areas I travel, saves on memory. It's equivalent to a paper map - that works for me. Being free, the price is right. Bottom line... It's a keeper, even if it isn't perfect.
