The excitement continues but what I think makes this novel amazing is not the action and great story, but the incredible amount of information found about the Maya. The author, Mark Cheney, has travelled throughout the Yucatan Peninsula and studied the history and artifacts of the ancient Maya civilization. So when Mark writes about the road his character Yax Kan travels on through the jungle he doesn’t just tell you it’s a road. He explains how the road was made, who travelled on the road, what trade was transported there and in what fashion. He takes you along that road for a while with him and his characters. This wealth of information comes when you study or carve the glyphs with Yax Kan or walk through the pyramids or visit the salt mines near Lubaantun. Because of Mark’s own testimony in the Book of Mormon and his studies of how these anthropologic finds support the Book of Mormon I found myself loving the way he seamlessly weaves the history and lives of his characters into what we know of the history of the book of Mormon. When Mark writes of spiritual things I got goose bumps! When Yax Kan receives answers to his prayers I understood the message of this book, “that if someone sincerely seeks after the truth, that child of God is going to be given some peace and assurance, even during times of apostasy on the earth.” - Mark Cheney
Like other fictional books and movies based on scriptural stories, this book is going to make others do their homework to find out where the facts end and the fiction begins! After reading Mark of the Jaguar I feel like I have been given a glimpse of a world where religion has become muddled and where practices like blood letting and human sacrifice are part of a confused culture being taken over by evil practices but where truth can be found if someone sincerely seeks! The story is well written, the characters are easy to love and as Yax Kan goes on his quest for truth about the one true God and the lost history of his people I thoroughly enjoyed being along for the ride! By the way, where can I get a pet jaguar?
