THE MARK OF ZORRO starring Douglas Fairbanks, Marguerite De La Motte, Noah Beery, Robert McKim, Charles Hill Mailes and Snitz Edwards. Directed by Fred Niblo. Zorro, hero of the poor and oppressed! Zorro, champion of the weak and downtrodden! Zorro, mysterious masked swordsman who appears from nowhere and can outduel any challenger! Douglas Fairbanks IS the original Zorro in this, one of his most famous, action-packed and entertaining films. A showcase for his charm and amazing athletic talents, Doug plays a dual role as the rich and foppish Don Diego Vega, a disappointment to his father and a miserable failure at love, who secretly becomes the courageous fighter of injustice and champion to those in need.
This is the breakthrough film for Fairbanks, forever establishing his persona as the dashing, energetic hero. A role he would embrace throughout the rest of his silent film career. A dazzling performance!
SHOOTIN' MAD starring G.M. "Broncho Billy" Anderson, Joy Lewis, Fred Church and E.A. Whitting. Directed by G.M. Anderson. Pretty Mary and her father are new arrivals in the lawless western town of Bear Gulch. Desiring Mary for himself, evil saloon owner, Ace High Cowan, has her father murdered and frames Billy for the crime. With Billy and her father out of the way, Cowan can carry out his wicked schemes on defenseless Mary! With lots of gun-play and action, this is a top notch Bronco Billy western.
Original music scores composed and performed by John Mucci!

Of course, the movie is one of Hollywood's GREATEST classics today, and considered the 'grandfather' of more or less EVERY action adventure where heroes, horses, swords and daggers are involved, and it's certainly an absolute MUST for every serious movie fan to get to know it - not to speak of the ENORMOUS entertainment value it possesses! And the well-restored copy this DVD contains is surely MARCELOUS; nobody would even guess that this movie is almost 100 years old!!
("Go, Zoverstock!!" --I.e., the name of the seller:)
It came in my mail yesterday afternoon, and I "test-played" it almost immediately.
It's THE 1st "Zorro" movie (silent, B&W, with a dubbed-in music-accompaniment) starring Douglas Fairbanks Sr., as a very athletic and indeed dashing "Zorro" and appropriately silly and fluffily apathetic "Don Diego" alter-ego.
It was also, as I recall hearing, his FIRST "costumed swashbuckler" film; he'd already done several films, but this was his first "costume drama" type.
(He also did the 1st -- I think -- "The Thief Of Bagdad" film, "The Black Pirate", etc.)
(I already have a VHS copy, so I knew I liked the movie itself.
But I wanted a DVD also so I could share it with some friends who haven't a VCR.
--I was afraid it might not get here soon because of my previous experience with trying to order another copy of this same DVD from another seller, which never did come.
But these folks came through!
--I was worried at first when it didn't arrive almost right away after buying it with "1-click ordering" but when I contacted this copy's seller, and found it was coming from Zoverstock which is a seller in the UK 'stead of the USA, I was impressed, and understood the wait.)
Oh, I forgot to mention this. Will someone please tell me what is it that Zorro is snorting? Seriously!, it is the best part of the film. Before Zorro beats up the bad guys, he makes his entrance by showing up smoking this huge cigar which releases a cloud of smoke. Then he whips out this small tin box and then proceeds to snorts its contents. Seriously!. Did you just say "What the hell?", cause I sure did when I saw that. I'd love to know what he is snorting, so if someone knows, please post. Puts a new spin on they don't make things like to use to.
