I love this sander. The handle is comfortable and makes sanding allot easier. I had another vacuum sander but never ended up finishing a job with a regular sander since the other vacuum sander was so uncomfortable and difficult to use. Using this I was able to do a small drywall job in my house without moving out or coating the house with dust as happens with a regular sander. I'm not a professional so I really appreciated the soft grip which made holding onto it after sanding for a long time much easier. I also liked being able to shift hand positions and use both hands for difficult parts or to give my arms a break.

This sander was a decent solution to my sanding problems, but it has some issues as well. I needed something to augment a Porter-Cable wall sander while I refinished hallways and staircase walls. The Porter-Cable sander is an amazing tool (a little expensive), but something else was needed for the edge-work. That's where this Marshalltown vacuum came in. It does a good job of sanding, but because it isn't an orbital sander you really need to be careful not to grind straight lines right into your walls. With the vacuum applied it is also tiring to move because it adheres to the wall so tightly. In the end, it serves its purpose for edge work, but it is still a pretty rough tool. I replaced the hose that was included because it was to flimsy.

Ordered in spite of several reviews that noted the bottom surface wasn't completely flat. Sure enough when I look at mine the surface is visibly concave. Figured I'd give it a try, hey maybe it's supposed to be like that! Nope. The corners dug into and gouged the walls.

SO. I removed the handle (no tools needed.) Heated the bottom half with a heat gun and then clamped to a flat piece of wood. Waited about 10 minutes for it to cool down and presto, the surface is now flat.

Works great! Catches more than 90% of the dust. Only a very small trace gets out. Makes the job much less hassl.

Can't complain too much. It was cheap and only needed a little tweak to make it work right.

I first tried the Shop Vac model which was absolutely horrible and more costly. Took it back to the store and ordered this one. What a difference. 99.9% of the dust is collected flawlessly with this model. What little dropped to the floor I collected by just holding the sander to the floor for a moment. No fine dust flying around at all. It has rubber grips and you can hold it from multiple directions comfortably (two hands at once even). I'm using it with a Ridgid 16 gallon vacuum with an upgraded filter in it. Note that I am sanding very hard hot mud with it - not the soft top coat stuff. It comes with 220 grit screen and that works very well on this compound. Definite keeper. Not sure why Shop Vac has not pulled their model from the market after seeing this one.

While the sander is a good idea, and it does consume most of the dust created with sanding, the sanding plate is cupped and sands through the compound along the edges before it hits the center. I contacted Marshalltown and to their credit they were outstanding. They sent me another one no questions asked and didn't even ask me to send the old one back. Unfortunately I now have two sanders with cupped base plates. If the plates aren't reasonably flat you cant feather seams out the way you need to. I might try to lap the edges with sandpaper and a flat surface to take down those outside edges, but that's not something I should have to do. Great customer service(a dying art)but the product leaves something to be desired.

This is really as advertised. Works great, handles easily, and makes hand sanding into a comfortable job. It is strong and rugged but light weight and well balanced.

I read the reviews about this product because I had a fair amount of sanding to do on a basement sheet rock project. Overall, the product performed well for the rough sanding and had the variable air flow as suction can be great with a larger shop vac fitted with a HEPA filter. The rougher screens (80 grit) worked best to knock off the high spots and rough spots in the joint compound and very little dust was created with this unit. I found that a 150 grit soft sanding block worked best to resolve the gouge lines left by the sanding screens (even the 120 grit sanding screen). Overall, the handle design was good and comfortable. I ended up cracking the plastic coupling piece after reattaching the hose to the shop vac. I found that the plastic was thin and had to run to a home center in order to retrofit another coupling, which I was able to do for about $2.50...so no big deal. The product does exactly what it's supposed to do and as advertised. It's light weight, has good suction, draws the plaster dust into the unit and the environment is relatively dust free, but expect to clean the filter and shop vac frequently as the HEPA filters do clog after sanding 4-5 lengths of sheet rock. It's better to clean the filter than the whole room you are sanding and you can't beat the price.

This is a great solution if you have reasonable expectations and are careful using the product. First of all, it is nearly impossible to eliminate all drywall dust. No mater what type of joint compound you buy or how careful you are, some level of dust will get airborne and inevitably settle somewhere you don't want it to be. That being said, this tool is not perfect but is a great help in trying to reduce that amount of dust, especially for big jobs (such as renovating a room).

Because it uses the wire mesh sanding screens, if you are not careful you can accidentally take off quite a bit of compound without really trying, depending on the suction level and pressure used. After using this to completely refinish my basement and addition (40+ sheets of drywall), here are some suggestions based on my experience:
1) Make sure you use a bag in your shop vac, and that the bag opening fits tight around the hose connection in the shop-vac canister. This may seem like common sense, but once you start pulling in the fine dust, if it doesn't make it straight into the bag you will create quite a mess
2) Be cognizant of which way the vacuum is facing- the exhaust air coming out the back of the vacuum can make a dust cloud in any room if you are not careful. Make sure it is not close to walls that have been recently sanded; otherwise it will just recirculate any remaining particles on the wall or floor, again creating a mess.
3) Be careful how you hold the sander. There is a little slider on the handle that controls the amount of suction by opening and closing a hole- the bigger the hole, the less suction.
