Unafraid to tackle controversial material, LaToya has created not only a very fine novel, but she also presents a solid example of racism and deception in the setting of caregivers for the wealthy. Her ability to mold credible characters is matched only by her gift to create tense drama laced with skillful humor.
The shock value’ of MA’SITTER is established as we meet the primary character Victoria: “When I was pregnant, my beloved cousin, Zaka, was killed – shot in the back of the head.’ And after a fine description of this handsome ladies’ man, we learn more about Victoria. ‘I was seventeen when I graduated from high school and did not understand what I sought to do with my life…an unexpected young mother. All I comprehended was what I voiced to Zaka before he died, that I’d be a powerful boss, but what was I supposed to do? I had no guidance, and no, most of the time I was a penniless mother, as Mona’s daddy denied her….’ A strong woman, Victoria enters a caregiver’s life with consequences.
A fine overview of the plot is provided: ‘After the violent death of her role model, struggling single mom, Victoria, is offered a job as a caregiver for an elderly rich couple. Inside the walls of the Lane’s sumptuous Mississippi home, Victoria's dreams hover tantalizingly close: a peaceful life, a full pantry, and a safe neighborhood. Soon, however, Victoria realizes that it's all merely a facade, one that she drifts through in a haze, concealing an unfolding drama. The manipulative and racist Mr. Lane has plans for his wife’s wealth and they don’t involve her. As tawdry scandals are whispered behind manicured nails, unsavory truths are kept safely tucked behind beaming smiles. Victoria is suddenly thrown into a world where subterfuge and deceit are all-consuming. Now, being paid to spy on her employer by people who are as flawed as she is, Victoria navigates this complex world teetering on the edge of right and wrong.’
Delivered in excellent colloquial language, this story drives home many turgid concepts that make the book sail as both a psychological thriller as well as a revelation about racism and the arena of care giving. It succeeds on every level – highly recommended. Grady Harp, July 20
When I first started reading the book, I had trouble picturing this as a “thriller.” And I was wrong since the plot eventually develops and there’s a lot of deceit, intrigue, suspense, and pure evil amongst the pages.
Nonetheless, I have to say; the narrative is so well-developed, I enjoyed Victoria’s story as a black, single mom, as much as the central premise. Her inner thoughts, her witty remarks, her heartbreaking reflections felt genuine to the core. I found myself laughing at some parts. I think the author did a commendable job of portraying the culture, demeanor, and hardships of young black Americans, without falling into clichés.
Aside from that, the book had an unexpected ending. I did not see it coming at all! Very entertaining, very human, very fun.
Victoria is an African American woman who tries to get ahead. She is a single mother and would do anything for her little daughter Mona. She works as a caregiver for an older white couple, The Lanes. Everything starts normally, the days pass without much concern, except that Mr. Lane is a nasty and racist man. Until one day Victoria discovers a macabre plan. Can she escape unscathed from that web of intrigue and conspiracy?
At the beginning of the reading, I doubted whether it was a thriller or not, but as I went through its pages, the intrigue, mystery and crimes took over the story. I loved it. It is a short but very captivating book. From the beginning I felt instant empathy with Victoria.
The characters are very well constructed and the dark thoughts of some of them left me absorbed.
It is an extremely entertaining book and you will not be able to stop reading it until you finish it. You will be trapped by its plot.
I definitely recommend reading MA'SITTER. Because it is a roller coaster of emotions.
