Recently, I had the need to get a dual band DMR/Analog radio and I looked at several models. None of them were all that highly rated but I chose this one based on the fact that it uses the same body, battery and accessories of the older UHF only model. Since by side, they are physically identical on the outside.
The new UV version has some really cool new features. It has dual receivers allowing you to have 2 different channels on the screen at the same time and then switch between them via the up-down keys. It took me a few minutes to figure out how this worked because I kept getting an "Unprogrammed" on the second line.
In the zone list in the programming software, you have 2 windows to add channels. All of your channels are available to be added to either window. If you do not populate the second window with any channels, you won't be able to use the dual receive function. It also gives you the ability to mute one of the on screen channels so you won't be disturbed by it. I have not yet found a way to just copy the contents of channel block 1 over to channel block 2.
It would have been nicer to have been able to select a different zone for each receiver instead of having 2 channel windows per zone. Maybe in a future software update...
So, while there is a small learning curve to the programming to take full advantage of the dual receive, it's still really nice...
The major complaint I have with this radio, is while you have the option to add more than 16 channels to a zone, the rotating knob they used is not very good. The UHF only version had a 16 position channel knob. This one has an endless knob, meaning that it turns around and around. The problem is that it goes channel by channel one at a time as you rotate the knob. Whether you turn it one click or 5, it still only advances by one channel. Sometimes it even goes backwards. For example, if I want to go from channel 1 to channel 5, it will go 2, 3, 2, 3, 4,5. Even though you are turning the knob clockwise, sometimes the hardware interprets the turn incorrectly. It also will only allow you to turn channels at about 1 channel per second. The volume knob is rather quirky as well. I would rather see up/down buttons instead of these marginal knobs.
I would say that this radio is "Entry-level" at best, but has a LOT of nice features at the price point. These cheap Chinese radios have come a LONG way since I bought my first Puxing back in '09. Given everything said here, I think this radio is a good value as long as you aren't expecting anything near Motorola quality.
And yes these are as good if not better as my UHF MD-380
The radio feels a lot higher quality than I thought it would. The audio is plenty loud for me and I haven't found any really big negatives with it. The instructions are terrible but that was expected so I can't really fault it too much for that. I would certainly buy another one of these and honestly may buy one for my Dad, I think he would have a good time with it and it would be nice to use when we camp together. The digital signal seems to have clearer signal for a greater distance and through things based on what I am seeing so far. I can get my signal out of my basement to the dmr repeater much better than I can get my UHF/VHF analog out to the same peaks with the repeaters.
All in all, I think this was a great buy and I would do it again.
