This sunscreen looks and feels fairly thick, with an off-white/cream tint. The ceramides and silicones give it a lot of slip on the skin, but it does dry to a matte finish. It blends quite well for fair to medium skin tones, and works under a powder or liquid foundation.
It isn't moisturizing enough to use on its own (I have combination/oily skin, and my husband's is normal/dry) - the Moisture Defense is better in that regard. I tend to use the Moisture Defense in winter when it's less humid, and the Mineral Creme in the summer when it's more humid.
You should use an antioxidant-rich, oil-free, silicone-free moisturizer as a base layer, and here's why: 1) Antioxidants will boost the SPF power of your sunscreen, 2) Oil is the enemy of mineral sunscreens, 3) This sunscreen has a lot of silicones already and it doesn't set well over a first layer of silicones IME. (I've been using Trader Joe's Antioxidant Moisturizer plus Alpha Skin Care Nourishing Eye Cream, and it works pretty well).
This brand takes a good five minutes to dry/set completely, but then I can apply makeup over the top. I use a powder foundation, which helps the sunscreen set. If you use a liquid foundation, apply it lightly - if you rub too much you'll disturb your sunscreen layer. Don't apply the sunscreen to the eyelash line, that'll help eye makeup stay in place. Also, don't get the sunscreen on your eyelashes if you plan to apply mascara, and use a powder foundation before a brow pencil.
Zinc sunscreen can be drying, so you really do need to clean it off at the end of the day and only oil-cleansing works on mineral sunscreen. I like to use a warm microfiber washcloth to rinse, or sometimes a face wash (aka double-cleansing). Definitely apply a moisturizer or lotion afterward.
Overall it's more work than using a chemical sunscreen but I think it's worth it. This product is one of the better ones I've tried for facial use - it has a higher percentage of zinc, dries pretty clear, sets well in humid conditions, and comes at a pretty good price per ounce.
I love the fact that it does not have that common coconut scent. It is very smooth and easy to spread. I use it whenever i leave the house. It has a very good rating on the anual online sunscreen safety ingredients list. It is a little on the expensive side but i have noticed that a little goes a long way thanks to its "spreadability." I love the fact that it uses natural ingredients including vitamin C which helps to protect from the damaging infrared spectrum. I really recommend this sunscreen if you value your health.
What concerns me are (1) the price (Amazon's price is especially high) and (2) the fact that I develop more freckles with this sunscreen than with SPF 50 chemical sunscreens. I am laying the sunscreen on thick, but perhaps not thick enough. I will probably keep this one for winter and rely on other brands for warmer weather.
I’ve tried that either go on too pasty and tacky or too white. I put this on 30 mins before getting into the pool and had no problem with it running in my eyes or anything. Plus this got a highest rating by the Environmental Working Group. This will make me want to wear face sunscreen every day.
