A few days ago, I saw this new Meater+ that now has a built in extender in the charger. I received it 2 days ago and have made Ribeye and Tri-tip already. It works great.
With Meater (original one) I used an old iPhone next to Weber BBQ that would connect probe to Wifi. Then I used my iPhone to connect to probe anyway in the house. I have an access point in my house and could stay connected down the street. With Meater+, no iPad is needed now. The wood charger now extends the Bluetooth signal from probe. How it works is you just leave the charger next to BBQ and it extends the signal really far. I didn't measure the exact distance but my BBQ is in the back yard and my office is on the other side of the house upstairs. Connected perfectly and I answered emails while my steak was cooking. When alarm went off, I went back downstairs and had a perfect ribeye! Even tells you how long to let it sit before you cut it up.
Couple tips- I updated the original Meater app on my iPhone and make sure you do the initial charge for 4 hours. I was so anxious that I tried connecting probe to iPhone out of box and it wouldn't connect. I thought it was defective. But then I let it charge for a few hours and then it worked perfectly.
Used it on a brisket in a smokey mountain smoker
App loaded quickly and set for Brisket Smoking
Connected quickly to to the Meater
put the meat in the smoker and then it all fell apart
the base charging unit does not go 10 feet I had to have it within 1 foot of the smoker to get any kind of reading
Connected to the application and gave me an accurate reading on external temp and meat temp verified with the smoker temp gauge
walked 10 feet away lost signal and I got the 165 foot model!
Will not give an accurate reading for how long it takes to cook told me 2 hours for a brisket! then kept adjusting and could not give me any indication of time
I let the smoker work overnight and left my phone with the app no further then 10 feet away as I could not move it. woke up in the AM the application lost all connect and stopped the cook!
I love the concept but the execution of the entire system is not ready for prime time
Don't waste your money until they come out a new model that can do what it claims. I will be returning this expensive paper weight.
Probe is ALWAYS dead when you pull it out. Turns out theirs only 1 direction it can be turned when placed in the dock to charge and no way to tell which direction is right.
Oh by the way there is no way to tell if it is charging and its a simple circuit with the light so just because the light goes out to show "its charging" only means metal is touching the 3 contact points. You can put a spoon in this thing and it will say it's "charging"
Also no way to see if the probe is just broken or not charged.
The required app doesn't do scaling so I can't even use it on my Sony Xperia XZ 2 Premium (I need to use a old S3 seriously?)
The range on the probe is around 5 feet of direct line of sight.
The range on the dock is around 50 feet without obstacles.
Contacted support for a few issues and got no where seems they only have sales people.
Product could be good but for $100 these people are insane. Wouldn't spend more then $15 on this as it NEVER works when you go to use it.
The ability to also monitor your cooks over the internet with an additional iOS device was also pretty sweet.
Sadly though this only lasted through 3 cooks. (Turkey, Ham, and a Tri-Tip) It seems like there is an issue that if the ambient portion of the thermometer gets even the slightest bit dirty it prevents the probe from connecting to the block. I have scrubbed and scrubbed and after the last cook it will now not connect. I am including pictures so you can see how clean it actually is.
Will update after my conversation with customer service. In their own words...”We are experiencing a high number of inquiries over the holiday season and may be slower to respond. Queries will be answered in the order that they are received. We aim to get back to you within 3-5 working days (Monday - Friday)” Hmmm. Wonder why?!?
If they get it figured out will be great. Would just wait until the 2nd or 3rd generation

It sounds good in principle but it cannot handle temperatures higher than 250 degrees C, it is too large for small prices of meat, ie kebabs, small steaks etc and mine stopped working after approx 5 mths.
I have another remote gauge and I have to say it’s cheaper, more flexible and so far reliable.
Oh, and I contacted support 4 weeks ago and have not had a reply. Getting the email address on their site is also difficult.
The top of the probe (the black bit) joins the main stem and is glued in (not screwed via a fine thread - glued).
Therefore when this product gets hot (which amazingly it will do) the glue that keeps the top section stuck to the stem becomes malleable and the top comes away from the stem - allowing any dirt, fat, water etc into the unit.
Why - really just why would you use a compound that is susceptible to heat in a product that gets hot like this.
Secondly, the returns process is like something out of the olden days...
1) You have to write to the Customer Service team via email
2) You then go through the problem and submit details
3) They send you a form which you have to print out and fill in with all the details you've just provided to them
4) They book a courier (no they can't provide prepaid returns labels....) and you wait for them in the morning or afternoon etc
5) The courier doesn't turn up
6) The courier randomly turns up at a different time and date
You wonder if you will ever get a replacement. Useless system.
1) Send another item immediately to the customer and pre-charge their card if they agree
2) Send a prepaid label for the return to the customer
3) Receive faulty unit back and cancel prepaid charge
It's easy. What is wrong with these companies. They are founded by seemingly intelligent, creative and industrious people - who don't seem to have a clue how to operate in the real world.
Wow! I selected a leg of lamb for my first cook and it was easy to set up. The YouTube on the website explained how to insert the gadget in the thickest part of the meat and how important it is to thrust it in far enough to register accurately. It’s possible to adjust the temperature required by a few degrees either side of the pre-set which is advantageous once you determine exactly how you like your meat cooked.
I cook on an Everhot range which is similar (but I think better than) an AGA. You can set the oven temperature but you don't keep changing the setting as with a conventional oven.
We were mesmerised by the display showing both the inside oven temperature adjusting to the introduction of the cold meat and the rising internal temperature of the joint as it cooked. Once the MEATER+ worked out how long it would take to complete the cooking phase, we were able to tear ourselves away and get on with the rest of the dinner.
I had never before appreciated how important it is to rest the meat after cooking is complete. The display showed how the internal temperature continued to rise after I took the joint out of the oven. Fascinating. The MEATER+ alerted me to the end of the resting time and we could eat!
I started with good meat but this temperature-controlled cooking ensured we ate absolutely amazing, perfectly cooked lamb. I was so pleased with myself, though the MEATER+ did all the work for me.
Next, I tried it with sirloin steak. Slipping the MEATER+ in sideways wasn’t as tricky as I had anticipated. Again, perfect cooking. This is really successful, confident cooking and although it’s not cheap to buy, the MEATER+ will make certain I never overcook, undercook or otherwise waste good food by poor cooking. It will pay for itself in practical terms over time but has already proved worth its cost in guaranteeing success every time.
I have an iPhone and the app is super wasy to download and use and understand.
Cooking and using it is really simple. Select the meat and the type and then wait until it tell you it's cooked. The app will also give you a rough time to be finished. What i love the most is the Cloud setting. This allows you to set up the probe on one device and then go out and about and be able to view your cook on a seperate device to keep an eye on. Great for those long cooks and if you want to pop to the shop or pub to help pass the time.
Really good all round look with regular updates on the app to improve your cook all the time.
