I'm really glad I got this brand.
I always research everything I purchase, but didn't see very many positive reviews on any of the LED badges sold on the Internet.
What made me decide was the fact that this has built in software. I'll tell you more about that later, but it's sure nice not having to look for the disc when you might need to reprogram this a year later or use another computer.
I see it came with some kind of instructions, but I never did look at it.
I kept reading on the reviews that the software was hard to load, or there was no documentation or something negative.
All I have to says is after reading all of the negative reviews, I see none of that with these (I bought 12) for a high school reunion. (No, we don't have 12 people attending, we have 12 people helping! 200+ attending, just in case you were wondering).
At first I didn't know where the on/off switch, but its on the side and small. Some call it delicate or flimsy, but it looks and works just fine.
The button on the back controls the messages and brightness.
The software loaded just fine on my PC and opened without anything unusual.
The screen is smallish but ok. Not a full screen on the computer..
I figured out the program after a while. I say a while because as anything in life, especially when it comes to computers and programs, there is a learning curve, and since I didn't read the instructions, I played for a while to see what everything did.
What I didn't like at first was the fact that the fonts didn't center in the display, thinking that was going to limit me in what I could use, but after the second day of playing I found the button to actually move the display right or left, or up and down! That solves everything. Now I can size the font anyway I want, where ever I want.
I did notice that the display speed #1 is the fastest and I haven't used anything slower, at least for most of the messages I did.
Also most of my messages will display from right to left, as most bulletin boards would scroll to read because if you, say, displayed a name that was to long it would display it in 2 groups and cut your word off as the screen can only display so much.
You have to play with words, font sizes and fonts to get longer words to display instantly all the way across the screen, so that's why I use the scrolling. But I do use the drop down feature for short words that I want to flash or?
So yes there are drawbacks and limitations. Some fonts do not display very well, like script. Just doesn't work well on a 11 X 44 dot matrix.
Also Ive heard that some other badges that advertise 12 X 48 matrix do not use all of the dots, or do not display all of their dots. This badge is advertised as 11 X 44 and does use all of them.
I ran my badge on 20% brightness (100 and 60 are really bright!) and it ran for 10 hours before I had to shut it off. I'll run it again since that will be the brightness I'll be using but I expect it to run for a long time. I'm testing at 60% brightness now and so far its been running for 7 hours. (Update, 9 hours now). (11 hours now and still going strong on 60% brightness). I'm shutting it off now. It's been over 17 hours on 60% and still running. That should be long enough not to worry about the batteries running out.
The display isn't perfect, as it has a little shudder, as it does not scroll smoothly all the way across, there is a very slight hiccup in the scrolling, noticeable, but doesn't bother me. I think its from the display option where you can get the display to stop for a number of seconds, which I use when I have the text drop down or something, and you want a delay. I think instead of 0 second delay, there is probably a .01 second delay or maybe the processor is very slow and maybe its thinking?
So is this easy to program, well as I mentioned, there is a learning curve but you can really get the display to do some cool functions if you are creative and play with the different functions in the software.
I have to program 12 of these, so by the time I get #12 done, I'll probably go back to some of the first ones and add some features, oh like borders. Forgot to mention those. They are great, work great. but as I mentioned, some limitations, like if you want the display to twinkle, or change fonts or size, it will all have to be on a different line, like having your first name on line 1, and your last name on line 2 with flashing or in a border, then go to the next line and put your next message, and break it up on different lines with different features.
Another thing to add is with the digits at full height, you can read the badge at around 25 feet away, assuming you have good eyesight and the badge is stationary.
I would have given this 4 stars but I have concern on the included Software. The program should be a simple program but seems to have some malware/spyware included. Every time I launch the program or try to open a file for the first time, I have to block the following attempts to do something to my system.
HDSmart is attempting to inject module into all processes by setting up a global trap.
HDSmart is attempting to duplicate the internal handle of the windows explorer process.
HDSmart is attempting to read protected file.
On occasion I also get several more or it wanting to access TCP/IP. I see no ned for this. However, after blocking all of these each time it is used, I have not issue using the software or programming the badge.
I have had the software crash on me a few times which is annoying, since it's not a super well made program - but not the end of the world. Overall would recommend as a fun novelty item.
It runs for literally hours and charges fast..
I've bought two now as someone stole my first one after it fell off during a fight and someone scooped it..
I recommend removing the setup file from the nametag and just keeping that file on your setup computer so if lost no one can use it easily...
