As someone with little to no lock expertise, I have no idea how to tell a good lock from a bad one. Is it the price? Is it how cool it looks? How many reviews on Amazon? So I defer to the professionals. Enter LockPickingLawyer. If you ever want to feel like everything you own could be stolen at any point in time by a miscellaneous lawyer with a turning tool and a pick in 2000ths, then go watch his videos. I mean, the guy literally spends more time talking about why the locks he gets suck than he does actually picking locks.
Anyways, from my understanding, the only bike locks that would provide any sort of security (from an amateur) are disc detainer locks. Forget about combination locks those can literally be decoded faster than the code could be inputted to open it legitimately. So now that you've learned that the lock you just bought is worthless, go throw it out and buy this one. Unless your bike is being stolen by someone who has the pick that Bosnian Bill and LPL made (which is now sold over on covertinstruments.com) you're probably good with any disc detainer lock.
Ok, but what if they do have it? Well if they do, it won't matter if you have the $150 kryptonite lock or this one, cuz your bike is probably gonna go get stolen. But, if you go to the LPL youtube channel, you'll see that most of the videos are under two minutes. BUT the Meet Locks U-lock video is 3 minutes and 13 seconds. That's right, this lock gave him a bit more trouble than your average lock, so what that means is that if an expert picker is trying to steal your bike, you'll have 60 more seconds to potentially catch them in the act. Thats good enough for me.
