If you love superb mids, and favor highs (treble) over lows (bass), these are GOLD, but act fast; they have been discontinued!
I'm not anti-bass at all, but I do prefer a clear low over booming bass any day. Everything you have read about the lows are true.
I favor monitor-quality (true toned, flat tuned) head phones, and was looking for a great, affordable IEM (in-ear monitor). Unfortunately, in the high-low to mid-high level price range, you really do have to pick which end of the spectrum you want to favor. I had purchased a pair of Klipsch x10s, and thought they were exceptionally mediocre. It was said that their highs were neutral with a slight bassy embrace. Slight? No. Not at all was it slight. It was almost booming, would RATTLE my head at 65% volume. And personally, I thought it was a little full, muddy even.
Like I said, what you have heard about the lows are true, but I really want to cover the highs, since no one really seems to want to.
These make the highs dance. I love electronic inspire pop (i.e. Kate Ryan, if you know her). I used her tracks to really put these to the test, and it was dazzling. Now because it was dazzling, it means that they push treble without an equalizer applied. DO NOT SELECT A TREBLE-PUSHING OPTION WITH THESE! It will distort. However, with it off or set flat, these truly shine.
If you love stunning vocals with dancing surrounds and sound-staging, scoop these up quickly. The bass is so near perfect on the neutrality spectrum, its amazing. You will NOT get booming bass, nor do I believe that you will get it with an amp even, but as far as making the decision for monitor-style earbuds, these are the way to go. It would be nice to have the option for TRULY neutral IEMs at this price, or even to around $150-$200, but we don't live in a perfect world. This is what you get for the time being, and that's not at all a bad thing.
Reviewers who comment on the 161's 'dull' treble are exagerating -- yes, these are not the best IEM's for brushed cymbals but brushed cymbals come through musically. Yes, the roll-off of very high frequencies does result in a less closely defined soundstage than some other IEM's, but the soundstage is still well defined and beleivable.
"Immersive musicality" is the way I would describe the sound -- not perfect, just better than anything else I've tried under $100. Recently I tried the HiFiMan RE-400's, a well reviewed $100 IEM, and found them considerabley inferior to the 161's THe 161's have an overall sound that is the closest of any under $100 IEM's I've tried to the same music played through a good stereo system.
The disadvantage is the wires -- as others have said, the wires are thin. No way would I use these for exercise or travel -- just handling them gently enough to avoid damage at a desk is a challenge. But for seated home or office use they convey music really really well for an under $100 IEM.
I listen to music for extended periods of time and enjoy having these headphones comfortably located in my ears!
I've had this product for 3 months and I noticed the sleaving around the wire right next to the ear piece starting to pull away. Sent a message to the manufacture to see if this was covered under the warranty.
The response from the manufacture was excellent! The response was timely and very willing to take care of my situation.
All my previous headphone purchases in the past had always been in the $20.00-$30.00 range with very limited sound quality. I had grown tired of being disappointed with all of these entry level headphones and had started searching for that next level of sound quality. All the reviews that I had found were positive and pointed to the high quality of this product.
Sound quality of these headphones is very good and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these headphones.
