Being a black man in the military, razor bumps were a daily issue for me and even threatened my career. I found wet shaving 5 years ago. I started with a Merkur 34c. It served me well for a short time. I switched to the Merkur Slant bar. I needed a more aggressive shave because I wasn’t getting as close as I needed. After many bloody mornings of trial and error, I got the hang of the slant.

I decided to give this razor a chance but didn’t have high hopes. Pulling it out of the box, it felt clunky and clumsy. I instantly set it to the highest setting and had regrets buying it. I gave it one last chance....I set it on 2 and the results are amazing!!!! Daily use of it on the head and face and I’ve yet to cut myself!!! This will be my go to razor. I’m tempted to buy another just to keep in the box as a backup.

I've read a lot of safety razor reviews and watched a lot of youtube videos that demonstrate how to get a great shave and after about 45 years of shaving, I've come to the conclusion that every beard and every face is different and everyone must adjust their own shaving experience to meet their own uniqueness. Having said that, I will agree that taking care to find the right "attack angle" of the blade to face and taking care to take a light touch are probably universally important to prevent an unpleasant shaving experience. I have adopted a few ritualistic steps that have made my shaving experience pleasant and I now look forward to shaving. I never would have said that years ago.

Let me start by describing my own "uniqueness". I am approaching 62 years old and while I grew a beard at 19 or 20 that provided full coverage, it was not too coarse when I was young. As I approached my mid-50's the texture changed dramatically to "bristle" as it turned completely white. My skin is sensitive (especially in the area below my adams apple). I mention all this because my ritual and thus my review on my uniqueness and you may want to take what seems relevant to you and forget that which is not applicable.

I find that the first important step is a very thorough washing in warm soapy water. I do this in the shower and I take a lot of time to make sure I have washed all my facial oils off of the portion of my face that I plan to shave. I am especially oily in my chin area and that is also the part of my face that has the thickest "whiskerage" and those whiskers are most coarse. I find I have to wash repeatedly to get the skin to be squeaky clean. When I get out of the shower, I do not dry my face and apply shaving oil. I use a sandalwood shaving oil now. I know it sound hypocritical or counter-intuitive to take such great pains to wash away my own natural oils and then turn around and "oil myself up", but this works for me. My guess is that the natural oils seem to cause the razor to drag over my skin because it seem to be naturally sticky and thick while the sandalwood oil seems to be light and lubricates my skin. I take my time in working up a really dense foamy lather with the brush by wetting the brush thoroughly and whipping up the soap until it is as close to the consistency of aerosols shaving cream from a can. It occurred to me when I first discovered the great shave I got from this consistency of soap that the inventors of aerosole shaving cream were trying to emulate the consistency that a professional barber might work up for his customer in the days when one went to a shop for a shave. That's totally my imagination, but it seems likely to me. I apply this dense foamy to my face with almost a "paintbrush" technique. I used to work it in in the initial application by holding the bristles perpendicular to my skin, but now I literally paint it on my face first and then I go back to the hard to reach areas (like under my nose) and working into the skin to make sure I have through coverage.

I took the advice in the Merkur Futur packaging that suggested I start at 1. I am glad I did because in my first shave, I did not get the "attack angle" right and found that I held the handle of the razor almost parallel to the part of my face I was shaving. I have found that I must raise the handle up a bit and I also allow the natural heft of this heavy razor apply all the pressure. That is to say, I do not press at all. I let the blade glide with the grain in strokes that are only about 1 1/2 inches long. Another recent technique I discovered is holding the handle with thumb and forefinger only in that portion of the handle that is slightly narrower. This is much closer to the blade than I ever held it in the past and it gives me the sensation of almost sliding my fingertips over the surface of my skin as they are so close to the head of the razor.

From videos, I learned the technique of using my tongue from the inside of my cheeks and the areas around the inside of my lips to create a firm flat surface across which I draw the head of the razor. The area around my nostrils is the toughest spot for me and I was fearful of sliding the razor over the edge of my nostril while pushing the tip of my nose up in my "pig nose pose" as I was afraid I'd scrape off a huge swath of skin, but I tried it and it works for me. I just take my time to keep the angle of the blade so it is not perpendicular to the skin it is gliding across.

After shaving my entire face with short strokes, a light touch, careful angle of attack, and pulling the area I am shaving tight with stretching my skin with the use of my tongue from the inside and craning my neck and jaw about, I do a careful second pass. Before I attempt a second pass, I wet my face again and instead of shaving with the grain, I draw the head of the razor against the grain with a very light touch - again with short strokes, but this time I go forward and back without lifting the blade off my face as I go back and forth - against and then with the grain. Then, I lift the head of the razor to reposition the blade on the next area. Once I have finished this "against the grain" pass of my entire face, I rinse with water, blot dry with a towel, and apply an alcohol-free witch hazel with aloe which I let dry on its own.

Now that I have explained my "unique technique" from which I hope at least one reader has been exposed to at least one new idea, I will give my thoughts on how this particular razor accommodates me. First of all, it is a handsome set that takes just a little space next to my basin. I like the heavy weight in my hands. Both the handle of the brush and the razor seem to be solid metal and I like that. The bristle of the brush looked a bit scant when I opened the box, but I discovered it "bloomed" with the first use and it allows me to whip the soap into a dense lather and is easy to use as I "paint" on the soap and return to "work it in" to the crevices I have beneath my nostrils. The head of the razor opens by grasping the ends between thumb and forefinger and it pops off easily and once the blade is loaded, it pops back on with a satisfying soft click. There is an adjustable ring that I have set at 1 which can probably be set between the numbers as it does not have more than a subtle click at each numeric setting and will stay wherever I chose to leave it. The discovery of holding the handle with tip of thumb and forefinger settled my initial concern that the handle was too short because this grip not only gives me fingertip control of my shave, but also causes the end of the handle to nestle comfortably against the palm of my hand.

All in all, I gave this item five stars for aesthetics, craftsmanship, and design driven by function. It was pricey, but as I said, it has helped turn a chore I tried to avoid into a grooming experience I look forward to.

UPDATE: A bit over a year after purchasing this razor, the posts on the top piece that secures the blade to the handle have worn so much that the blade jumps up and down. Must be made of soft pot metal. I was wondering why I was getting sudden nicks and now I know. You would think that such an expensive razor would be made from stainless steel, not junk! Back to my $12.00 Feather Butterfly💈.

A little background, I have been wet shaving for about a year-and-a-half now and I absolutely love it. I've tried tons of DE safety razors following in the footsteps of beginners before me, starting with a Merkur 34C. I then progressed to a Mühle R89 which was noticeably more aggressive but still manageable. After purchasing a Gillette Fatboy, it quickly became my go-to Razor. It was very easy to shave with, usually keeping the settings between 3 - 5. I would require several passes to get a smooth shave mainly due to my technique, especially when using a lower setting.

Per my acquisition disorder, it did not take long for me to want to buy another razor. After doing a lot of research I came across this one. I noticed a lot of people were saying that it is very aggressive, however once you got used to it it would give you a great shape. As I stated earlier I typically don't have the best form and have been prone to nicks here and there. Even with all of the talk of the aggressiveness, I still felt like trying this razor out ( mainly because it looks amazing). Per the title of this review, I am very happy that I did. I get a consistently great shave with this razor. As one can imagine, it has not been very forgiving but there's still more room for error than with even more aggressive razors. With regard to Quality, the build itself is solid. It is quite heavy and feels very secure with no rattling. The mirror finish of the Chrome model is immaculate and almost looks too good to use lol. It is incredibly easy to change blades and also to disassemble the handle.

I did not feel the need to go to end up with this review, as anyone can get online and find tons and tons of reviews for this particular razor. Coming from someone who was skeptical at first, I am very happy that I purchased this and I think it will soon become my favorite razor to use. I highly recommend it if you're on the fence, you will not be disappointed!

I loooooooooove this razor indedinitely

I have honestly and 100% NEVER shaved with a DE (double edged) razor before and was wondering and intrigued and curious as to what all the fuss about DE shaving was about

I spent a good month looking at DE razors online and all the different types, designs, shapes, sizes, functions etc.... and the design of this one caught my eye and I loved how it looked and looked at reviews online from at least 6 different sited and was immediately impressed by the look, weight, sound and functions of this DE razor and saw at LEAST 3 rip-off versions of this genuine Merkur Futur razor on here and elsewhere and thought to myself "Why are people buying these cheaper versions when they can get the original and best in terms of build and engineering quality"

Fair enough I get that some people maybe can't afford this German branded razor BUT think about it this way - most cartridge blade shavers spend £20 give or take on blades every 8-10 weeks on average - that's £100 a year at LEAST on replacement cartridges

You can get 100 blades (yes that's right - 100 blades) for a DE razor for £20 or less and you can get at least 5, maybe 6 shaves per blade before it needs changing (I've worked out I change my blade after 6 shaves)

Assuming you shave 3 times a week (like I do) and one blade lasts 2 weeks, that's 200 weeks (or 4 years) in which 100 blades would have been used and for £20, that's a ridiculous amount of saving AND you're easily getting a better, closer and smoother shave over cartridge blade razors

So whilst the savings on the blades are significant and obvious, spend £60 on the real genuine German built Merkur Futur and rest assured that it will be of excellent quality and not a cheap rip-off version which could rust and most importantly not fit the blades properly, which in turn will be very costly and damaging to your face

Bottom line - I wish I switched to DE shaving 20 years ago but better late than never

The other products in my pictures are the Proraso red shaving cream which just smells out of this world, a Proraso after shave balm cream which was sent to me as a trial and that feels and smells even more amazing, my Razorock plissoft brush which is EXTREMELY soft and king of shaves shaving oil which I apply before brushing my face with shaving cream

When I shave now, I use a hand towel and use boiling hot water from the kettle and wet the middle of the towel, wring out excess water and apply to my face gently (NOT whilst it's still boiling hot straightaway) and hold it on my face until it cools down (this is my home version of a Turkish hot towel shave)

I then apply the shave oil all over (including neck and sides of my neck where the hair grows) wash my hands (the oil is quite slippery obviously), lather up my cream in a bowl for a minute or so, apply to my face and do my first pass on number 1 of the Merkur Futur razor with the grain, apply more lather to my face, second pass against the grain on number 3 and apply lather for a 3rd and final time on number 5 and finish off any areas I may have missed

Don't forget to rinse the razor under warm/hot water inbetween shaving

End result - baby bum smooth face and an invigorating and fresh feeling

I actually look forward to and enjoy shaving now whereas with a cartridge razor, I couldn't wait to finish

I see shaving as an art now and love it so much that I could shave 24/7 !!!!!!

Oh and by the way - I can actually HEAR the razor cutting the hair/stubble off as I glide the razor on my face - something I never heard with any cartridge razor and to hear it do it's job is a somewhat new but weird feeling (in a good way) and the feedback from the razor is just insanely wicked

I would seriously suggest and strongly recommend buying this over the 3 rip-off versions because you're paying for quality and build and it's no secret that Germany are known for their exquisite attention to detail and engineering

When I finish my shave, I take off the "lid" of the razor, wipe the sides of the blade with a kitchen towel and replace ready for my next shave

The whole process from boiling the kettle to finishing cleaning my razor takes 20 minutes at the most and it's something I love doing

With a cartridge razor, it took 5 minutes to have a shave and I couldn't wait for those 5 minutes to pass

Il rasoio è arrivato ben imballato e nei tempi preventivati in fase di acquisto.
La Merkur, casa tedesca della famosa zona di Solingen, in Germania e la produtrice di questo rasoio di sicurezza. Merkur è ormai da anni una garanzia e un punto di riferimento per gli amanti della rasatura tradizionale.
Il rasoio è venduto in una semplice e minimale confezione di cartone, all' interno della quale troverete un piccolo dépliant di istruzione e una lametta Merkur.
Questa versione satinata è molto bella perché secondo me ne esalta perfettamente il design futuristico e moderno di questo rasoio. L' effetto satinato rispetto al cromato aiuta inoltre ad aumentarne il grip del manico che su questo modello, a differenza di molti altri rasoi in commercio, non è zigrinato. Preciso solo che durante la rasatura, nonostante l' assenza di zigrinatura e anche con le mani bagnate, non ho mai avuto problemi di grip.
Di questo modello vengono prodotti anche la versione cromata/lucido e quella dorata/ gold.
Questo rasoio di sicurezza è consigliabile ad utenti già esperti nella rasatura tradizionale, visto il suo peso importante di quasi 130grammi e l' ingombro della testa che richiede una buona tecnica di rasatura.
Rispetto ad altri rasoi dalla testa più piccola, si "fatica" un pochino nella zona sotto al naso, ma niente di così penalizzante.
Trovata la giusta inclinazione di circa 30 gradi, con mano leggera, NON occorre premere assolutamente il rasoio sul viso, ma semplicemente "tirare", e come per magia, la pressione esercitata dal peso della testa del rasoio è perfettamente calibrata per assicurare una rasatura accurata, profonda e confortevole.
Nelle varie prove pratiche il risultato ottenuto è stato fantastico, regala un esperienza di rasatura eccezionale, molto profonda e ben eseguita senza la minima irritazione.
Ho diversi rasoio DE, dai quelli a pettine chiuso fino a quelli molto aggressivi a pettine aperto come il mhule r 41, questo merkur futur li comprende tutti, la possibilità di settare l' esposizione della lama con una scala da 1 a 6, consente di variare molto bene l aggressività e la profondità di taglio a seconda della zona del viso, del verso di rasatura, dalla lunghezza della barba o dalla durezza della barba.
Il rasoio si comparata bene anche con barbe dure e di più giorni, settato a 4 con la prima passata fa già un ottimo lavoro.
Oltre il settaggio numero 4 al momento non ho ancora provato, ma la percezione è che diventi bello aggressivo.
Per chi si rasa giornalmente o comunque di frequente, un settaggio più basso (tra 2 e 3 ), e diventa un rasoio sempre accurato ma abbastanza gentile sulla pelle, dove non ho riscontrato nessuno stress o arrossamento dell' epidermide anche dopo diversi mesi di utilizzo.
L efficacia della rasatura consente di diminuire i passaggi e questo garantisce infatti alla pelle uno stress inferiore e un risparmio di tempo per la rasatura quotidiana.
In sintesi veramente un rasoio fantastico.
Ultima chicca, durante la rasatura "canta", ovvero produce un rumore caratteristico e piacevole mentre recide la barba che con altri rasoi non ho mai provato.
Il costo di circa 59euro é abbastanza elevato, ma li vale tutti, sia per la qualità costruttiva, dei materiali utilizzati che dell' esperienza di rasatura che è in grado di offrire.
Lo consiglio.
In commercio e qui su amazon si trovano anche dei modelli cinesi che si ispirano al design di questo Teutonico rasoio, e vengono venduti attualmente a circa un terzo del prezzo.
A voi libera scelta, io personalmente come primo approccio a questo modello regolabile ho acquistato l' originale sia per motivi tecnici e qualitativi, e anche una questione di onestà intellettuale verso l' azienda merkur che ha ideato questo rasoio.

Pour remplacer mon Edwin Jagger

Il y a déjà de cela plus d'un an et demi, je découvrai l'existence du marché du rasoir de sécurité à l'ancienne que je croyais ne plus exister, n'ayant vu guère que mon grand père se rasant de la sorte.
Tout a commencé en réalité par mon désir d'un rasage plus précis pour avoir la peau lisse sans un pet de barbe. Je me rasais alors avec des Gilette trois lames jetables. Je tiens à préciser d'emblée que contrairement à beaucoup je n'ai rien contre les rasoirs jetables qui peuvent aussi être assez efficaces. D'ailleurs j'en utilise encore de temps en temps pour fignoler ou si je veux aller très vite. D'ailleurs, je pense que beaucoup de commentaires exagèrent, il n'y a pas non plus de révolution dans le rasage au passage au DE (qui est d'ailleurs l'ancêtre du rasoir actuel).

Pour en revenir au rasage de sécurité, j'avais acheté à l'époque un Edwin Jagger DeBL89 pour des raisons financières et sécuritaires (j'avais repéré le Futur mais eu un peu peur). Je dois dire que le résultat au début etait loin de mes attentes (je n'espérais pas un miracle mais mieux que ca). Au fil des mois, je me suis amélioré un peu mais j'avais tout de même des problèmes fréquents : coupures au cou, efficacité faible dans certaines zones (mâchoire, creux du cou) et la sensation désagréable que le rasoir était trop court.

Las et mieux nanti, j'ai commandé enfin le Merkur Futur. Je me suis rasé quatre fois avec lui, trois fois avec des Gilettte Bleues extra et ce matin avec une Feather.
Au début, prudent, je n'ai pas dépassé l'ouverture 3. Mais, à la deuxième fois, je me suis lancé et attaqué l'ouverture maximale (dans le sens du poil) et 3 (pour la deuxième passe à rebrousse poil).
Et après quatre rasages, je dois dire que je ne me suis jamais coupé contrairement à mon expérience avec l'Edwin Jagger. En plus, l'ouverture du rasoir me permet de me raser de façon plus précise. En fait, je me suis tellement bien rasé ce matin que je paraissais presque imberbe ! Jamais je n'avais atteint ce résultat avant.
Par rapport au DeBL89, je sens que la lame est moins courte et touche donc bien la peau à tous les endroits de mon visage mais en plus la qualité de rasage est moins sensible à l'inclinaison.

De manière absolue, je ne trouve pas ce rasoir si agressif que ca (apres ma peau s'est habituée et j'ai gagné en technique grâce à l'Edwin Jagger). En ouverture 1, c'est un rasoir normal même à mon sens.
La prise en main est bonne grâce à la taille et à la forme du manche. Le rasoir est aussi plutôt design.

Les seuls points noirs que je vois sont :

- la grosse tête (il faut se contorsionner pour bien raser sous le nez), défaut mineur
- le danger que représentent le capot qui tient coincé entre deux barres tendues (effet ressort) et d e l'ajustement de l'ouverture, en effet notre doigt flirte souvent très près de la lame, défaut notable

Je mets quand même 5 à ce rasoir pour sa qualité de rasage importante. Je suis très satisfait et d'ailleurs je songe à en acheter un second car je l'ai gardé pour mon second lieu de vie et après le Futur, même s'il est pas trop mal, il fait pâle figure (pour mon visage en tous cas).

J'ajoute que si vous avez un visage anguleux, je vous conseille d'acheter un rasoir avec UK écartement suffisant (comme ce Futur) même si vous êtes débutant. Car avec un rasoir trop serré, vous serez probablement déçu. Je joins une photo comparative.

Ausgezeichneter Rasierer

Ich habe Rasierhobel von Mühle in den Ausführungen offener Kamm (R41) und geschlossener Kamm (R89) in Verwendung. Weil die Rasur mit Rasierhobel sehr viel Spass macht und ein besonders gepflegtes Gefühl vermittelt, wollte ich einen anderen Rasierhobel ausprobieren.

Da bin ich auf den Merkur Futur aufmerksam geworden. Der Merkur Futur vereint sozusagen mehrere Rasierhobel in einem Gerät. Der Rasierhobel ist in den Stufen 1 bis 6 einstellbar. Von einer sanften bis zu einer nachhaltigeren Rasur auf höherer Stufe ist alles möglich. Besonders auffällig ist, dass der Merkur Futur ein hörbares Feedback bei der Rasur gibt. Der Merkur Futur hat ein wesentlich höheres Eigengewicht, als die beiden Mühle Rasierhobel. Geschmackssache.

Verwende für den Futur die Klingen Astra grün, Astra blau und die Feather Klingen. Alles sehr gute Klingen und keine Probleme damit. Der Merkur Futur hat einen größeren Rasierkopf und ist daher direkt unter der Nase nicht so komfortabel wie die Mühle Rasierhobel zu führen. Ich selber komme allerdings mittlerweile sehr gut zurecht und habe meine Technik gefunden.

Der Merkur Rasierer ist ein tolles Gerät mit einem außergewöhnlichen Design. Mir gefällt er ganz ausgezeichnet. Welcher Rasierhobel ist der Beste? Schwer zu sagen. Ich erziele mit allen Hobeln mittlerweile sehr gute Ergebnisse. Mit dem R89 kann ich mich "blind" rasieren so einfach ist dieser zu bedienen, mit dem R41 und dem Mühle Futur ist höhere Konzentration angesagt, dafür wird man mit der nachhalterigen Rasur belohnt. Den Merkur Futur verwende ich auf Stufe 3 und stelle nach Bedarf (quer, gegen den Strich) die Stufe etwas zurück.

Alle drei Rasierer sind für Anfänger geeignet. Bin schließlich auch einer, seit ca. 5 Monaten verwende ich Rasierhobel. Zuletzt verwendete ich aus Zeitgründen (Wecker ging nicht ab) wieder mal einen Systemrasierer. Kein Vergleich. Es fehlte das Gefühl der guten und angenehmen Rasur. Da hat der Tag dann schon nicht so gut begonnen.

Fazit: Der Merkur Futur ist ein ausgezeichneter Rasierhobel. Vielleicht für den Benutzer besonders geeignet, welcher nur einen Rasierhobel haben und dennoch die ganze Bandbreite von einer sehr sanften bis zu einer nachhalterigen Rasur in einem Hobel vereinen möchte.

Beautifully crafted razor

I bought this razor 9 months ago mainly for the design and in the hope of a better shave. It's the most recent purchase in my collection of 4 DE razors and probably the last. I love the weight and solid feel. Blades are easy to load. The main benefit for me is the ability to adjust the settings. Settings 2 or 3 are fine for my medium coarse beard. The higher settings are good for making a clean line under the sideburns. Other reviewers have commented on the size of the razor head and difficulty shaving under the nose. There is a technique for this which is relevant to all DE razors. Suggest looking for YouTube videos. I have the polished chrome version. The handle is very smooth and grip can be difficult when wet but not a major problem. The only other issue is that the adjustment on my razor sometimes sticks and needs a very strong grip to twist the adjustment mechanism. Not wise with a blade in situ. The shave is no better than my cheapest DE razor which cost around £20 but worth it for the quality. In my experience over several years of DE razor shaving, the blade is the biggest influence on the comfort and quality of the shave. Gillette 7 o'clock Is my favourite.

Aggressive! But in a good way

First impression was very good the razor is gorgeous. The weight is reassuring and the whole thing feels solid and well built. The balance is perfect and even with the smooth handle the grip feels solid and secure. Blade installation is easy but a word of caution. Do not try to adjust the razor with a blade in the chance of you cutting yourself is high as the entire handle has to be rotated and with a blade in the only safe way to hold the head would be by the thin edge which detaches to install the blade. For a first head shave (I only shave my head not my face as I have a beard) I left 2 days growth and set it to 3 to get an idea of the severity. This razor is aggressive! Even on this mid setting you can feel the aggression. There is nothing in front of the blade. Once you get the angle though this will remove stubble with ease. This razor takes some getting used to and practice but gave a very satisfying smooth shave. The question everyone asks is how does it compare to the R41? I have both and would sum it up as the R41 is an efficient razor while this is aggressive. On 3.5 this is as aggressive as the 41. Not for beginners and the size of the head takes some getting used to. A very good razor and I would recommend.

I've been shaving using d.e. razors and cut throat razors since puberty, old fashion dad hard to adhere to new things in life, never had one of those disposable Mach 3 4 5 or whatever they call it nowadays , I don't really need new shaving gear, I just purchased it out of curiosity and all the great reviews on the product
I must say the quality and finish of the product is second to none, it really looks absolutely gorgeous, a must for any collector, and the settings can be very useful in some situations like, 1- extra mild is great for shaving my head and 6- extra aggressive is great for dense beard or several days without shaving without the hassle of clogging up the blade gap with hair too often

But then comes the downsides, and there's 2 big ones: 1- the shaving head of this razor is HUGE, making it virtually impossible to cut the stubborn hair around nose, ear lobes and inside wrinkles. 2- I would not recommend this razor for a beginner at all, this razor on setting 5-6 is very aggressive indeed, if you are learning, it's not a question of if you gonna cut yourself it's more like how bad the cut is going to be, the blade gap on 6 is massive, get the angle wrong and your bathroom will look like a crime scene and your face will look like you just had meeting with Mike Tyson in his primer days, the irony is: I find this razor harder to use and more dangerous than any of my cut throat razors or shavettes, haven't cut myself in years, with this razor: I did indeed had some dna samples going down the drain on the first 3 times that I've used it. Well, it's a gorgeous piece of kit, but it's going to my collection and probably won't be touched again as a kind of like to have at least the remaining half of my nose on my face!

Ps: if you are new to d.e. Razor and are considering this product, i strongly advise you to go for something milder first until you learn the basics like pressure against skin and angle, something like a Edwin Jagger de89 or a Merkur 34c

Outstanding quality, superb shave

I always used cartridges from the age of about 16 up until about 35, when I stopped shaving and went to stubble with an electric razor. I would occasionally shave it off using a cartridge. More recently at the age of 43, I decided to have a go at trying a double edge razor. I did lots of research online and decided to buy this. The packaging is very German...quite uninspiring, so on initial looks, it might look underwhelming as a gift or present, but opened up, out of the box, this is a beautiful looking razor and feels special.
Someone had bought me a shave cream for Christmas, so I was eager to try this out. It did not disappoint. I've started on the least aggressive setting, 1. I took my time as the blades are very sharp and was nervous. Do not attempt to change the setting whilst wet as there's a good chance your hand could slip and cut. I've let the razor do the work as it's got a good, weighty feel to it. It looks fantastic and cuts superbly well with the Merkur blade that comes supplied with it.
It's quite a high initial outlay, but I'll have it for life as I'll clean after use and look after it. It oozes quality and engineering. On reflection, I might have started with a cheaper razor such as the 34C or Edwin Jagger DE89 or Parker variant...but I might get one of those too as I now feel I've missed out all these years. This type of shaving, whilst needing a bit more skill and respect, delivers a closer shave and a massive reduction in cost in the long term. I'm actually enjoying shaving now and will never go back to cartridges again. This is an awesome razor and I would thoroughly recommend it.

Don't let the potato peeler label, frighten you or put you off, I spent a few weeks with the setting on low (1-1.5), and I was still managing to cut myself.
I must be honest and say that it took a while to turn the dial up, I'm now shaving with the setting at 2.5-3, what a difference, I am getting incredible shaves, and unless I'm totally careless, not so much as a nick.
Take your time and find your own perfect setting.
I'm using Astra blades with a good shaving cream,
I like the sleek shiny finish, but it can be slippery, and you have to keep an eye on the setting, to make sure it hasn't moved, minor details which I can put up with for a perfect shave.

Well made, have to be careful swapping blades, at that price, although we'll made, I'd have expected something a bit more special. I used to use an old Gillette cheapo off the shelf razor when I first started shaving in the late 60s and this does the same job although at about thirty times the price and ten times the weight. Gives a reasonable shave but IMHO not as good as the multi bladed modern razors. Yes, the blades are an awful lot cheaper but factor in the cost of the razor as well and you may stay with modern. Because of the weight of this particular one it's not as agile around the contours of my face, at times it feels as if I'm trying to shave with the weight of a steam iron ! It gets up to three stars for quality, ease of use it'd be two stars

Excellent product. My first time using a safety razor and seemed to do the job. A lot more respect is needed when compared to a stamdard cartridge razor and a little extra time. The only thing that let it down was the packaging; the amazon box was selotaped together as was the actual razor box on the inside which seemed suspect. It would be difficult to present as a gift in this state.
