- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2025Quick delivery, product in perfect condition. Great collection of old cartoons, including the very first Mickey Mouse (Steamboat Willie at the time). My grandkids love 'em.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2023This collection contains ten 8-minute cartoons, all in the original aspect ratio of 4:3 (only the ridiculous bridging animation is widescreen). One is B&W: Steamboat Willie, the 1929 original Mickey Mouse cartoon. The others are in glorious Technicolor, and flawless. Most are from the late 1930s or early 1950s, and in no particular order. Two contain early appearances by Donald Duck, when he looked more like a goose, and two are Figaro (Minnie's cat) cartoons which so closely mimic Sylvester & Tweetie that one suspects there were legal entanglements at one time. For some reason, Disney has an aversion to ever putting the year of original release on its disks (or packaging), but, at least with cartoons, the year is on the main title cards.
I always preferred Donald Duck cartoons, probably because the brilliant Carl Barks was a gag writer for them. However, this collection is quite enjoyable, and the final entry, in which Mickey goes through the looking glass into Wonderland, has some animation that was much more fully developed in Disney's Alice in Wonderland feature (1951).
On the down side, pausing or fast forwarding brings up a timebar with a cel above it, which is really annoying, especially if you've paused to read something (like a map).
All in all, this collection is great value for both casual viewers and collectors. I hope Disney continues the series to include all their cartoons.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2023Can't wait for Volume 2!!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2023If you're just looking for a disc to throw in for the kids to watch, this might be alright. On the other hand, if your an adult collector of animation, there is little here to like.
I'm mostly a fan of Warner Brother's Animation, so maybe I've been spoiled. I'm used to getting their discs with each cartoon as a separate item, some with commentaries, and at least a couple of extras included on the disc such as interviews, behind the scenes, trailers, etc.. This release had NONE of that.
Yes, it had 10 cartoons, BUT they were presented as if they were all one big movie with a modern bridging animation (poorly and cheaply done) between each cartoon. Sure, each cartoon was a chapter and you can go directly to a specific cartoon, BUT YOU CAN'T SKIP THE CRUDE BRIDGING SEQUENCES! There were also NO EXTRAS at all! Not even promos or trailers for Disney movies or shows! Nothing!
This was a completely missed opportunity on Disney's part. Instead of creating a quality product for both casual fans and hard-core collectors, they went cheap and released a very forgettable product.
I won't be buying the second volume unless I hear that it's a vast improvement over this one.
