The material use in the construction of the bag is 600 denier Oxford fabric. (Oxford fabric is just a name given to the type of weave used). This was once used as a clothing fabric and was made from cotton, but due to its strength and durability, its use is now far more widespread and it is also being made using synthetic materials such as polyester which I suspect this bag to be made from. (For those wondering what denier means it is simply a unit of measurement of the weight of fabric in grams per 9000 meters).
Inside the bag has a silver PEVA (polyethylene vinyl acetate) lining, in the product listing this is noted to be "food grade safe" it should be noted however that PEVA is simply a chlorine free alternative to PVC. According to greenhome.com as of 2013 PEVA is still full of "untested" chemicals and that for truly toxic free food storage anything made from vinyl is best avoided. As such, it is safer than PVC but is perhaps not entirely toxic free so ensure any food placed within is securely stored within a foil wrapping or BPA free container.
The bag claims to have an "Air-lock design -- to prevent air leaks", I will confess to being slightly uncertain of what this means but the bag certainly isn't air tight. When the bag is empty and zipped up the air inside can be squeezed out of the bag to make it flat for packing away. This is simply due to the zip however, and the actual bag, excluding the zip is watertight so should anything spill within the bag it most certainly isn't going anywhere as long as you do not tip the bag on its side / upside down.
The bag is predominantly green in colour of a shade between acid and lime green. On the bottom front of the bag and on the front edge of the lid is a separate piece of material trim (of the same type of material) that sports a multi coloured stripe pattern. On the front of the bag on the right above this stripped trim a "MEIR" branding, logo measuring 7.5cm x 1.2cm that has been applied to the bag in a white satin stitch.
On the front of the bag located 3.7cm down from the top of the bag is a side pocket. This has a black cotton zip with nylon teeth and a single black non magnetic metal head and pull. This pocket measures 19.5cm deep and the opening is approximately 25cm wide. This is also lined with the same PEVA material that the main compartment is lined with however unlike the main compartment it has no insulation one the front surface so its ability to keep contents cool or warm will be limited in comparison.
On both edges of the bag there are open edge pockets formed using black nylon mesh stitched into the seams. These measure 14.4cm deep and the opening measures approximately 19cm wide. The opening edge is fitted with an elastic edge that allows the top edge to expand by about 200%, but given the width of the pocket it is going to need something fairly large to be inserted for it to be held securely in place with the elastic.
Also located on the sides of the bag is the shoulder strap that is sadly non removable. This is attached to the bag 2.5cm down from the top on each side and is stitched onto the bag with a box and cross reinforced stitch. While it is non removable its length is adjustable, its adjustment is however slightly limited by the inclusion of a non removable but free moving shoulder padding.
Making use of the shoulder pad, the strap is adjustable between 122cm and 90cm. It is possible to make the strap shorter (minimum 58cm) but if it is reduced below 90cm the shoulder pad will be off centre.
This shoulder strap is made from polyester canvas and measures 4cm wide and is very capable of remaining at any length set even when the bag contains a heavy load. The padding I believe to be in the form of a piece of neoprene encased within the same green material used to construct the bag with along with a black canvas bias trim.
As well as a shoulder strap the bag also has a set of carry handles as well. On the back of the bag the handle is stitched on in the same manner as the shoulder strap with a box and cross reinforcing stitch. On the front the handle construction is actually concealed behind the front pocket zip.
The carry handles measure 3cm wide and 37cm long and are made from the same black polyester canvas as the shoulder strap. The handle on the back of the bag is also fitted with a non padded locking strap that is simply made from a piece the same green material used throughout the bag. This is fitted with two wide strips of hook and loop Velcro and can be used to secure both handles together.
The main compartment of the bag has a zip opening that runs all the way around the top edges and front, allowing the top (the lid) to fold all the way back. This zip is also made from black cotton with nylon teeth, but has two black non magnetic heads and pull tabs. Unfortunately, at least with my particular sample this zip does have a tendency to catch at one particular point, it is ok most of the time just as long as the zip is opened / closed carefully.
This compartment is fully lined with PEVA and is insulated with what is believed to be a reasonably thick layer of bonded neoprene. There are no compartments or dividers within the bag and the only other feature of note is a small white tag simply advising "Made in China".
There are a few loose threads evident inside the bag and the overlap edging has been left raw (it should be folded over and stitched into place) so if it gets caught there is a risk of tearing or damaging the stitching. Overall the quality is on par with similar bags I have seen in Dunhelm and Wilkos at about the same price.
Keeping things cool.
In this test six 500ml bottles of water that have been in a fridge for several days were placed within the bag. Using a non contact thermometer the temperature of the bottles were tested when they were placed within the bag and then checked on a regular basis. The ambient temperature was 20c to 22c and the bag was stored in a shaded area during the test.
At the start the water bottles measured 6.9c
After two hours the bottles measured 9.1c
After three hours the bottles measured 10.1c
After four hours the bottles measured 11.4c
After seven hours the bottle measured 14.8c
There are a couple of points that should be noted. Firstly the bag was not full, like your fridge the more you can cram inside the more efficient it will be at keeping things cool (once they are chilled). I only had 6 water bottles to hand, but it would have taken another two.
Secondly An ice pack can be added which will vastly improve the performance of the bag. Lastly, I did go into the bag quite often to check the temperature and each time I did the bag was open a couple of minutes to take a reading and a picture. While this might give a real world indication of performance if say you are out at the zoo for the day and frequently going inside for drinks and snacks the bag would likely perform better the less frequently that it was accessed.
Keeping things warm.
Sadly, I have not had opportunity thus far to conduct anything even remotely scientific. I can say this, however, yesterday I went and bought us some McDonalds for lunch. The restaurant (if that's even what you can call it) is a 15 minute walk from our house, usually by the time I bring the food home and we sit down to eat the food is lukewarm at best and burgers are slightly dried out.
Using the MIER lunch bag to bring the food home despite only being a 15 minute journey home the food was not just significantly warmer it also tasted much fresher and juicier. (Although the chips were unbelievably salty and were binned).
Full disclosure, I was provided with a sample product in exchange for a fair and honest review. No attempt was made to influence my opinion and my review is my own thoughts based on the use of this item.
(Updated review): After seeing my review about my ripped bag, Mier shipped my a brand new one right away, free of charge. Because of the excellent customer service, I've updated my review to 5 stars.
My original plan was to use it for protecting my glass containers. It has padding that's about 1/4 inch thick. I have usen it for carrying fragil items like porcelain bowls, glass containers, and eggs.
I've also used it for keeping the most perishable groceries, like milk, cool on really hot summer days.
The gray surface material in the interior always feels cool to my hand and always feels cooler than everything else in the room in warm temperature.
In addition to the handle that is secured by velcro, it comes with a removable and adjustable shoulder strap. The strap has a shoulder pad which help me tolerate the heavy loads.
I was able to fit:
4 12oz cans
2 mini soda bottles
1 18oz water bottle
A bag of cheese and salami
A bento lunch box
A small container of chips and guac
& a king size Kit Kat!
I also fit 4 thin ice packs and I still had room to spare.
The side pockets are great for small plates and utensils.
I love going to out door movie screenings and they allow you to bring in food and drinks so this will definitely get a lot of use this summer.
