1) It had to be quiet when not alarming. Many clocks beep as you press buttons, which is very annoying.
2) The backlight had to be usable and easy to find in the dark.
3) The backlight needs to be off when not wanted.
4) It had to be rugged enough to survive if my two-year old got her hands on it. (That's what did in my last clock.)
The Howard Miller 645358 meets all these requirements. It has easy to read digits. It is very easy to set, with intuitive, well labeled buttons. It has two alarm modes: a 'snooze' mode, where pressing the backlight gives you a few minutes more sleep, and what I would call a 'daily' mode, where pressing the backlight resets the alarm until tomorrow. The alarm itself starts out quiet, then gradually increases in volume.
The clock also has a thermometer, which is a non-critical feature but can be useful. I would recommend this clock to anyone.
The good: It doesn't beep when you push the buttons, it has a good display and a good light that's only on when I want it, and the alarm and time functions seem to work well.
The bad: The buttons are on the outside when it's all closed up. How I didn't notice this in the picture, I don't know. But I know from experience that they'll get bumped in my bag and it will beep when I don't want it to, or lose battery to an accidentally-pressed light button. Darn.
Well, I take off in a few days, so I guess I'm stuck with it.
