The first novella is Kate is living in totally obscurity from the love of her life Duncan finds life in a tiny diner in a small town Daisy, Arkansas. Kate had to leave Duncan and New York since his life is ruined by diamonds and she knows that it no matter what the allure of the gem will hold Duncan in its power more than she ever could. Of course living away from Duncan doesn’t protect her from people that want Duncan too. Will the power of the diamond hold Duncan captive or will be able to save Kate from the people that took her.
As I stated before I didn’t really connect with either Kate or Duncan. Both of them didn’t really endear me to their situation. I didn’t like Duncan’s cold stance and even though he said he loved Kate I didn’t really feel that. Kate was little better but I only felt the love she had for her son not really for Duncan.
The second novella is about Huck wanting to learn to play golf to beat one of his work colleagues Trey. Huck needed someone to take him seriously but when he goes to the golf lessons instead of meeting his original coach who is fired. Huck meets a sassy beautiful woman Amelia “Mimi” Beringer can he get her to teach him golf or will he lose his job in the process.
I did feel a little bit better about Huck and Mimi. I liked Mimi’s feistiness and that she wasn’t scared to stand up to Huck even though he was being a jerk to her. Huck wasn’t really winning me over until he showed his loving caring side. Even though I yearned for more I still wasn’t totally unhappy the story was nice and I did enjoy reading it.
I liked Duncan and Kate but I just didn't connect with them. I also felt that there wasn't enough of an emotional connection between Kate and Duncan. We were told of an intense love between them but never experienced it. Their romance had occurred in the past and we didn't even get flashbacks to it. The scenes with both of them in were too few, so this also limited our ability to see them interact and therefore to believe in their relationship.
The suspense side of the story was very good and I really enjoyed the interactions between Duncan and Bono. The scenes where Duncan was preparing to enter Marco's house, and the resulting scenes with Bono really drew me in. At this point the pace was good and I felt like we were really seeing and getting to know some good characters.
The quality and style of writing was good and I would read a longer book by the author. I appreciate short books make it difficult to tell a full story and this was just too short.
Duncan gets thrust back in a life he no longer wants in order to keep the woman he loves, Kate, safe. She's being used as a pawn to get him and his back is completely against the wall. But you'll have to read the book to find out what happens next. Especially when Duncan finds out Kate's secret!!
I voluntarily reviewed a advanced readers copy of this book
This one would actually have made an even better full-length novel
Duncan retired years ago - he gave it all up for the one thing that meant more to him than all the diamonds in the world
Kate walked away from the glitz and the sand - she made her choice what she held within was worth more to her than all the diamonds in the world
Years pass -life moves on -
till someone decides they want back what is theirs -
and we all know when it comes to recovering something that you hold dear - no price is too steep - no sin to dark to ensure its recovery
