I screwed the bulb into a goose neck lamp indoors. The shade on the lamp prevented light entering the bulb except from the bulb itself or a flashlight I could shine on the bulb. First I expected the bulb to sense it was turned on and then to turn itself off. Thereby making it flash on off continuously. But instead the bulb did what it was supposed to do; in the dark room the bulb would turn on. And if I shined the LED flashlight on the bulb, it shut itself off. And clearly the LED flashlight was not nearly as bright as the bulb. So this weak flashlight beam could shut off the bulb. Also I had thought the light sensor might be rotated into a wrong position, preventing the bulb from properly sensing outside light. But that possibility looks to be fixed by the entire frosted portion of the bulb being able to see the outside light and thus controlling the bulb.
The fact that I can unscrew an existing bulb and replace it with this LED dusk to dawn feature is great. At first I replaced bulbs on four outside lights on the front of the house and after seeing how well the bulbs worked, I replaced two floodlight fixtures on the back of the house.with similar globe fixtures as I have on the front.
One thing that did surprise me with the two in the back of the house. I have a motion detection floodlight nearby the new globe fixtures I installed. Looking outside the LED bulbs were turned on. I stepped outside and the two bulbs shut off. The motion detection floodlight had turned on and was shining on the globes. Re-aimed the floodlight to not shine on the globes and the LED D-D bulbs work great.
These lights are a godsend for all three issues listed above. They turn on when it gets dark automatically so I no longer have to remember to turn them on, turn off when it gets light again so I don't have to remember to then turn them off, and honestly makes the house more secure. They produce a good amount of bright 'daylight' light, which is important because statistically criminals shy away from brightly lit homes and instead go after poorly lit locations.
While I don't have a volt meter for the light socket, I did touch the bulb during the day when it was off, and there was no discernible heat that I could feel - this means that when it is off, it uses very little energy. When on, it does get a touch warm at the base, but at 7w, I'm OK with that. I estimated the cost of running all three lights year round all night long. Our power is relatively cheap at 6-7¢ per kWh, so our cost if it runs 10 hrs a day all year round is ~$1.50 a piece.
They look good, they work as expected, and have stopped us from having lights on 24/7 b/c we forget to turn them off. The ONLY thing I could remotely complain about is that they take ~0.5 seconds to turn on if you turn them off via the wall switch b/c they "reset" themselves to an "off" position. There's also no way of overriding the nighttime feature, so if the organic light sensor inside the device fails, it will likely default to an "off" state.
