My review is based on a pre-publication copy of Missing: Dead or Alive.

The story opens with every parent’s worst nightmare: their son fails to come home from school, and makes no contact. They wait… and wait… as the hours tick past, and finally dial 999. The police offer no help: children much younger than fourteen go missing often, but they usually come back. Forty-eight hours later, when no friends or relations the couple contact have news of the boy, the police do start an investigation, and discover nothing.

A television appeal is set up. We’ve all seen them… the much-loved son or daughter… a good student… friendly and thoughtful… It’s always someone else’s child, except this time it’s the only son of Maria and Bob Shepherd. Slowly, as the cracks begin to show in Maria and Bob’s marriage, facts come out that don’t add up with “the perfect son”. Evidence, some faked, some perhaps true, reveal a Tim his parents don’t recognise.

Maria, who almost lost her life giving birth to Tim, idolises him and refuses to accept that she will never see him again.. Bob doesn’t want to admit the boy with whom he shared football, and so much more, would stay away if he was free to return. Forced, if Bob is to stay in work, to move, they relocate but lack of trust between the couple sees Maria return to live with her parents, still hoping Tim will reappear even though the police investigation is abandoned.

Dead or Alive? Which is it, what happened to Tim, and why? This is a compelling story of a couple ripped apart by tragedy in mysterious circumstances and the suspense is maintained to the end.

A son disappears, parents despair then slowly unravel, police accuse the innocent deepening the rapidly developing psychoses, time fails to heal anything, and the sounds of sorrow go on and on. This scenario has unfurled itself over and over in highly followed news stories throughout the world. Now it is painstakingly detailed in this psychological thriller. Do not read this book If you have a missing child, it will cut your heart to the quick. I highly recommend it to readers who love suspense thrillers and are willing to endure the high drama this family is thrust into.

When a talented and promising young boy goes missing, Maria and Bob Shepherd seemingly ordinary lives came tumbling down or so it seems. But in the quiet town of Dexford, a disturbing mystery is about to unfold. Missing: Dead or Alive is a tragic tale of a missing child. The book is suspenseful and moves at a brisk pace. It will hold the reader’s attention till the very end.

Missing Dead or Alive leads the reader through the parents' anguish when their promising fourteen year old son disappears along with money from his mother's purse and a raid on her bank card which appears to indicate his disappearance is intentional. The impact on their lives and relationship as time goes by results in them separating and finding happiness with other partners.
Five years go by and Tim turns up unannounced. The devastation that ensues turns their worlds upside down and ends with a horrifying climax. This is not a son anyone would want in their lives and begs the question of nature or nurture?
Peter Martin has written a book with many twists and turns that could have many readers looking over their shoulders at their own kids. Read it if you dare.

This book gripped me from the start, Missing, Dead or Alive is a psychological thriller and every parent's worst nightmare. When Tim disappears his parents are devasted. The story takes you on an emotional roller coaster as his they struggles to understand why. Bob and Maria thought their world was perfect but with Tim gone the cracks slowly start to appear. The tension builds as the story unfolds. I found myself racing through the book to find out what happens. There are lots of twists and turns that keep your reading until the end.

Thoroughly recommend!

Peter Martin's Missing Dead or Alive was a powerful story that makes one step back and think about life. The story, which is every parent's worst nightmare, centers around the disappearance of a fifteen year old child. The story flows and there is a bit of suspense as well as twists and turns as the reader gets deeper involved in the story. More questions than answers turn up along the way. Highly recommended.

This is the grim story of a family that implodes when the 14 year old son walks away one day. He's his father's pride and joy, his mother's sole focus and love, and suddenly he's gone. The parent's fall apart, both internally and externally. The author does quite a good job showing us both the people the parents believe they are, and the true character that lurks underneath.

It's hard to say much more about the story without revealing spoilers. The writing and editing are solid and professional. The scenes are well set. The ending followed from all we'd been shown of the characters. If you're looking for a chilling read, you'll enjoy this book.

The worst nightmare, one’s child goes missing. The storyline was well set up for the characters (Tim, the missing fourteen-year-old, and his parents, Bob and Maria) to move through the engrossing scenes: starting with Tim being late from school and while the parents are waiting for him his mother notices she has 100 pounds missing from her wallet and is reminded that her credit cards had sums to the amount of 750 pounds also mysteriously withdrawn that she can’t account for. The storyline conflict/tension is established when the parents undergo the angst of their son not returning home and having no word on what has happened to him. The 48-hour lag to when the police begin their investigation is frustrating and heart-wrenching, only to offer nothing significant when it finally does occur. Desperately in search of their boy the parents do all they can to find him causing them understandable stress and strains their relationship, especially after the police uncover he is not all he has pretended to be to his parents’ great surprise and disappointment. But that’s not all the surprises as the plot takes a 360-degree twist and turns into the absolute unexpected. No spoilers here. What will happen to the parents? Will their boy show up, dead or alive? These questions will have the reader turning page after page wanting to know. This is a really entertaining good read!
