Of course, provided I never want to bake a cake or boil some pasta, I'm all set - the thermometer will tell me just when my turkey has reached the proper temp. I'm out of luck if I want to make mashed potatoes or a green bean casserole to go with it.
I really wish I could find another Sunbeam brand timer/thermometer. It lasted for years, and it somehow miraculously managed to handle BOTH preset temperatures AND times for less money. What a concept, 'eh?
I'm sorry if this review sounds bitter. I find it utterly insane that someone in MIU's research kitchen came up with the idea of copying the same body style of dozens of other kitchen timer/temp combinations, but decided it should only include temp settings. Because gosh, it's not like anyone ever cooks anything but meat these days, right?
The unit has Well Done, Medium, Medium Rare and Rare alert settings for Beef, Veal and Lamb. For Pork, Chicken and Turkey it only has a Done setting (175 degrees.) However the custom mode allows you to set your own alert temperature, which the unit remembers when powered off. The battery life is very good. I usually cook two turkeys for Thanksgiving, one on Thanksgiving and one the day before, and the unit stays on for 4 to 6 hours each day. This type of usage doesn't even put a dent in the battery life.
The only drawback is that the probe is vulnerable to the extreme heat that can be generated in a grill like the Weber. I've ruined several probes using them in the grill. It would be helpful if Amazon sold the replacement probes for this unit. I bought my thermometer at a local restaurant supply store, which carries the probes so I've purchased several. When I get down to one I go by more.
If you only use the probe in the oven and are careful not to let it touch the oven element and don't slam the door on the cord, the probe should last indefinitely.
This was a gift for a family member. I have almost the identical model but under the Pyrex label and it works wonderfully. My guess is that these are all manufactured by the same company and then have private labels placed on them.
