Editorial Reviews

The guys of MKTO, comprised of Tony Oller (22) and Malcolm Kelly (21) instantly became best friends when they first met on the Los Angeles set of Teen Nick's Gigantic in 2010. However, in between takes, the duo couldn't stop talking about one thing, making music. They linked with songwriters/producers Eman and Evan "Kidd" Bogart (Beyoncé, Ne-Yo, Rihanna) who inked them a deal to Columbia Records and began executive producing their debut album. MKTO features the uplifting and kinetic "American Dream," "Could Be Me," a collaboration with Grammy Award winner Ne-Yo and culminates with the stunning "Goodbye Song."

MKTO have seen international success with multi platinum top 10 singles in Australia and New Zealand, garnering a dedicated and loyal fanbase along the way and amassing over 1 million record sales worldwide.

I first found out about MKTO when they were opening up for Emblem3 in New Orleans. As a 22-year-old girl in a sea of girls a decade younger than me, I felt out of place and even thought about finding a bar until Emblem3 came on stage. I am SO GLAD I didn't. I initially saw Malcolm and recognized him as Walt from LOST and thought I'd stick around to see what his music was about. From the first note of Thank You, I immediately fell in love. A mix of old school hip-hop beats with a dash of bubblegum pop is what MKTO is all about. They are absolutely amazing. With their full-length album now out, they continue to impress me and I will catch them every time they are within driving distance of me. They deserve their own tour that goes beyond them opening up for other acts. If you don't believe in the power of their musical talents slightly held back by some of their tracks, youtube their acoustic sets and you'll forever be a believer. Great job Malcolm and Tony, continue doing you!! The following is soon to come.

Songs like "Classic" and "Thank You" had put them on the watch list quite awhile ago. Now that this album has finally come out, I think they will begin really making a name for themselves. I really like the tracks MKTO puts out for the reason that it isn't the typical vulgar sex, drugs, party lyrics found all too much in today's "music." Instead it is music that comes from the heart and it truly shows. They have an almost oldies remixed feel (think Olly Murs, Aloee Black or Caro Emerald), which I love. It is rare that I buy an entire album, but you won't be disappointed by MKTO.

I am an old-school listener. On "Classic," MKTO talks about classic singers like Marvin and Hathaway. Simply put...it is a hit. On "God Only Knows," MKTO capitalizes on a 1960s drum beat, harpsichord, and tambourine while talking about love. "American Dream" has a good message on the dangers of escaping from Anytown, USA heading for California in search of the American Dream. There is a powerful message in "Could Be Me" with guest Ne-Yo. This too is a hit. Until she eliminates her addiction to money, she will never see what or who is best for her. It could be 1/2 MKTO! In "Forever Until Tomorrow," she needs to slow down, stop trying to make lunch plans with his Mom, and realize that this is for today only. "Wasted" is a beautiful, heartfelt ballad where Tony recognizes his inability to stay. It is American Idol material. In "Heartbreak Holiday," Malcolm and Tony dread holidays because they both blew it and lost their loves. They stress that Valentine's Day cuts like a blade in this well-written, applicable, and real life story. "Nowhere" is a mellow and funky hit. It is also Malcolm's (i.e., Walt's and Little Saint's) solo. She's good to him and he's going "Nowhere." Good music with a Hammond B-3 organ. "No More Second Chances" featuring Jessica Ashley is also a hit where Tony and Malcolm talk about how she has to go. But, there is a twist. She has comments too! In "The Goodbye Song," she didn't come home until six in the morning so it's time to put her things on the lawn and have a bonfire! This is a hit. "Thank You" is their initial song which has already proven to be a hit. Each song is a story. The whole project is unbelievably good for a debut album. Get MKTO, read the lyrics, and enjoy!

I love this album, Tony's singing is great!! Malcolm's energy is fantastic! The lyrics aren't overly raunchy, sexual, or your typical Money/cars/girls cramp that's saturating radio now. These guys are the real deal with a little old school - pop - r&b mixture. My Favorite tunes are Classic and Nowhere, I can listen to them on repeat for hours! I can play the non-explicit with my preteen nieces and not cringe at the content. Best of all my 93 year old grandmother likes it, I love it (32), my son loves it (13), my nieces love it (10 & 6). It's great finger snappin' no drama music for all generations! Really! Plus...We found Walt! (For all the 'Lost' Fans).

Malcolm Kelley and Tony Oller are one of my favorite musical duos nowadays besides Karmin. Tony has an amazing singing voice, and Malcolm is one of the best rappers I've ever heard! Best tracks: Classic, Thank You, American Dream, and Could Be Me ft. Ne-Yo.
