One of my favorite features is hit streaks. Getting on hot or cold streaks accurately effects your players contact at the plate. This isn't some major modifier, but it gives your player a slight edge or decreased contact stat when you're on a long streak. Little touches like this to both batting and pitching make the game believable and exciting. Again, it doesn't make anything automatic, just a very light stat change.
The controls are solid. One beef I have in that department is the change in controls from RTTS mode fielding/baserunning and regular games. I understand it's a perspective thing, but sometimes when doing a long RTTS gaming session and then playing a regular game, you end up throwing to the wrong base or pressing the wrong buttons for leading off and stealing...causing all kinds of mayhem on the field.
The sound is pretty spot on, and the environments are excellent. 95% of the stadiums are in very realistic + believable surroundings. Then about 5% have really awkward object textures in the background that look totally out of place as they contrast so radically against the rest of the environment.
All in all, the game plays great and has a lot of value between modes and online play. Surely recommended to any sports game fan and especially baseball fans.
The graphics are incredible, all the players look so real, and they really do look like the real guy. This is the first PlayStation 3 baseball game that I played and I found that it takes some practice in getting the pitching good. I ended up walking a bunch of hitters before I could get strikeouts. For playing the fielders the game has a very easy and sensible control method and I found that it works very well. This game takes a lot of quick thinking just like baseball play really does.
So if you're looking for a baseball game that plays like one this one is hard to beat. It is very well thought out and the controls work very well, the graphics are fantastic and it has all the players and teams that you could ever want with their statistics programmed.
I looked at screenshots, and awaited the demos of both MLB 08 and 2K8. After playing the demo of MLB08, I put in my pre-order. A few days later the demo for 2K8 came out and I realized I made the right choice.
The graphics look great, and there are a lot of little things in the games presentation that make it feel like you are watching a live game. In the "Road to the Show" you start off in spring training on your favorite team. As the game progresses you are put in different situations with goals you have to accomplish, and if you do you'll be rewarded with points you can use for training back at the gym to improve your attributes. It's all a very entertaining process.
There are a few different options for the controls this year, and the game does take advantage of the six axis controller. It has a mild learning curve, but took little time to get the hang of.
Online play is greatly improved, and there is even an option to watch gamecasts of live MLB games. Rosters are updated constantly and can be used offline as well.
In closing.. this is the game to own if you are going to buy a baseball game this season. The 2k8 offering is just simply not an option in my opinion. Download both demos, and you will see why I say that!
