Editorial Reviews

The final segment is devoted to the unveiling of the All-Century Team, with glimpses of all 18 living members...

While 1999's home-run race between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa didn't set the records it did in 1998, it was still exciting, with each player hitting more than 60 blasts and McGwire topping 500 for his career. That's just one of the stories covered in MLB '99: A Season of Heroes, a 52-minute video combining highlight footage and player commentary. Other topics include Tony Gwynn and Wade Boggs reaching the 3,000-hit mark, Cy Young winners Pedro Martínez and Randy Johnson, David Cone's perfect game, and defensive gems by Ken Griffey Jr., Andruw Jones, Omar Vizquel, and Roberto Alomar. The postseason is also covered, with the Braves beating the Mets in a thrilling championship series and the Yankees holding on to defeat the Red Sox. Moving on to the World Series, witness the Yankees' Game 1 comeback against reliever John Rocker (in the days when he was a villain only in New York, rather than nationwide), which led to a sweep of the Braves. The final segment is devoted to the unveiling of the All-Century Team, with glimpses of all 18 living members (and no Pete Rose controversy) and a discussion of the youngest member, Ken Griffey Jr. The video closes with a shot of his name and new number 30 on a red jersey, reflecting his February 2000 trade to Cincinnati. Serious fans will want the greater details of the separate World Series and All-Century Team videos, but everyone will enjoy this overview of the 1999 baseball season as a whole. --David Horiuchi

From the Back Cover

The final Major League Baseball season of the 20th century had it all: record-breaking moments, amazing players and teams, and a century's worth of milestones and memories. MLB '99: A Season of Heroes delivers 55 minutes of baseball action:

• Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa slug it out again as they both belt more than 60 home runs each!

• The unforgettable All Century Team ceremonies in Fenway Park and Turner Field.

• Future Hall-of-Famers Tony Gwynn and Wade Boggs reach the 3,000-hit plateau within a day of each other.

• Exclusive coverage of David Cone's perfect game and the two no-hitters in '99.

• Pedro Martinez's near-perfect season as he and counterpart Randy Johnson become just the second and third pitchers to win Cy Young Awards in both leagues.

• Defensive gems, courtesy of the record-setting New York Mets infield; centerfields Ken Griffey Jr. and Andruw Jones; the dynamic duo of Omar Vizquel and Roberto Alomar.

Plus, you'll have a box seat for the incredible postseason series between the Mets and Braves in the National League and the Indians and Red Sox in the American League. And you'll be there as the New York Yankees--unquestionably the Team of the Century-- win their incredible 25th World Series Championship.

MLB '99: A Season of Heroes includes exclusive footage, interviews, MLB milestones, and the memories of a remarkable season that gave 100 years of Major League Baseball a fitting finale.
