The MMF Industries Jumbo Fire-Retardant Steel Security Chest with Key Lock (221615103) is constructed of durable steel and engineered with double-insulated walls to protect contents from fire damage. It is lab tested at 750 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes with paper media enclosed. The contents were charred, but legible. The chest holds file folders and 9-by-12-inch documents to lay flat in bottom. The chest includes a lock with two keys and two carrying handles for convenience. The sand-colored chest's external dimensions are 14-3/8"W x 11"D x 4-1/8"H (includes handles and lock). Internal dimensions are 12-3/16"W x 10-3/16"D x 3-1/2"H. This item does not come with a warranty card.

Sturdy chest with a simple lock

It's heavy, seems sturdy, and it's big enough to fit all my documents without folding them. The handles on each side are a nice addition. The lock is comparable to a desk lock, good enough to keep random people from snooping but if someone wants to get in then they will get in. If you're looking for that kind of security then this item is not for you, buy a safe instead. No idea how fireproof this chest is but it's quite heavy so I assume it'll be fine in case of a fire.

I originally gave this 1 star but, come to find out, I had received one that wasn't complete. The modification makes the box close tight! It is a good box for the 700 degrees they specified. I guess the older box lids did not fit tight. That problem has been fixed.

My primary concern in keeping my previous documents safe is honestly just fire/natural disaster. In that regard, as far as I can tell, this safety box will do just that. It's a simple but durable metal container with a simple locking mechanism. This container alone is pry not going to stop a determined thief, but I trust this will survive a fire. That's the most important thing to me.

Comes with two document envelopes. Not entirely sure how/why I would use these, but I placed some stuff in there no less. Does not come with container dividers or anything like that.

A good, basic safebox but not a high-security item

I bought this to keep a few items in at work, where small personal items seem to have a way of disappearing. I keep my silverware (just cheap stainless flatware) in it, as well as a couple of cofee mugs, coffee filters or K-cups, snack items and reading glasses, etc, all of which have miraculously walked off on their own on prior occasions.

I know they are just being borrowed, but they never seem to get returned. I lock them in here, put it high on top of the cabinets where I can reach it but most of my shorter coworkers can't (without a chair - kinda obvious) and the pilferage has stopped. This is a good, sturdy, well-made box, but the lock is simple, not a high-security item; it wouldn't stand up to tampering for long, but it serves my purposes.

Being all steel, it would likely stand up to fire briefly, but intense heat or long exposure would toast anything inside eventually as it is not lined in any way. It is also in no way waterproof, as it has no seals or gaskets, so I wouldn't recommend it for cash, important papers, or other valuables. Still, a good, reasonably priced lockbox.

Lost both keys, but opened it with a flathead screwdriver. I didn't buy this to be extremely secure, just something to inconvenience someone rifling through my stuff. Just know that if you lose your keys, you too can open it easily! Simply place the flathead in the lock, and turn real hard. The whole locking mechanism will twist. Great box imo.

Ever since my son was born I have accumulated very important documents, but never had anywhere to store them. I was always too preoccupied with work to worry about places to put my documents. When I worked at the bank, I decided to get a safe deposit box, but it wasn’t easily accessible. When I needed my son paperwork, I would need to go all the way to the bank. Plus, let’s say that the bank burns down, none of the things in the boxes are insured. As a result, I decided to store the documents in my house again, but I needed a storage device.

This lockbox is sturdy, it has a pretty nice weight, and it says that it is flame retardant. Inside the box you will find two envelopes for any valuable documents and one envelope holding the keys, I recommend keeping that envelope for any keys you need to store (I.e. an old car you want to gift to your loved ones). Hope this helps anyone!

had to spend my time fixing it

i have had this box for about a week and it is ok. the key turned in the lock but couldn't take out the key no matter what i did. didn't want to take apart lock or send it back so i tried over and over and finally got key back out but it was slighty damaged. put wd-40 in lock and worked the key for awhile and got it going pretty good but now the lock wasn't snug in the lid. it moved around sloppy. so i had to find the right size wrench and try to tighten it without stripping the tiny threads. it needed to be tightened a lot more than expected and hopefully i didn't mess it up worse. most people would not have fixed it but i really didn't want to deal with returning it. other than all these repairs it is just ok. light duty at best. i guess you get what you pay for and $30 isn't much.

Two handles on large size

I didn't realize there were TWO handles on this item. I thought it was just larger than the other size. Nope, it has another handle directly across from where the pictured handle it. That is not ideal for me & you can't take it off based on the design. I will adjust how I will be storing this as a result. Color, opening, ease of use of the key & nice large size still make it a purchase worthy product. Also wish I could have found the temperature it will withstand up to but I didn't see that information listed & I took a gamble that it will be enough if and when i would need that feature.
