There comes a time when every rapper decides to start their own record label. That record label is usually followed by a compilation album. Jay-Z (Roc-a-Fella), 50 Cent (G-Unit) Lil' Wayne (Young Money) & Eminem (Shady Records) are just a few rappers turned entrepreneurs who had low to moderate success. Now Rick Ross has now joined this list with his Maybach Music Group debut album "Self Made Vol 1".

Maybach Music Group consist mainly of Rick Ross, Meek Mill, Wale, Pill & the lost and almost forgotten songstress Teedra Moses. The song "Self Made" is a good introduction to all 6 artist each throwing their best jabs over a Just Blaze beat. A number of songs follow the same pattern of banging beats and a Rick Ross hook. "Pacman" w/Pill is a banger, the rest like "Fitted Cap" are boring. I don't know the purpose of "Tupac's Back" w/Meek Mill & Ross. And "By Any Means" w/Wale, Meek Mill & Ross makes no sense. The album jumps back in line with "That Way" w/Wale, Ross & Jeremih. The album's best track is "Pandemonium" w/Meek Mill, Ross & Wale. But then the album jumps back into skip zone with "Ridin On Dat Pole" w/Pill. The one thing I noticed is that Wale is at his best. He shines all through this album. His wordplay has improved greatly. He uses this album as his own personal resume as he separates himself from the mid level rappers.

When I first sampled "Self Made Vol 1" I thought this was the perfect summer album. The bass heavy beats with Rick Ross hooks and two up and coming rappers (Meek Mill & Wale) had me thinking this was the rap album of the year. But once I listened to it straight through, the same thing that had my attention also turned me away. The beats start to sound the same, Ross's hooks get annoying and only one of the 2 up & coming rappers holding his own. Overall the album is not bad. If I had to rank it amongst compilation albums I would put somewhere between Jay-Z's"The Dynasty" & NaS's "QB's Finest". I don't think "Self Made Vol 1" is a waste of time. But there's a place and time for it.
