Pros: Convenient to use; Dual USB charging ports; Includes replacement fuse; Blue LED shows power.
Cons: Max 6 amps won't work with a hair dryer; Slightly bulky, it's about half the height of a soda can.
I was particularly interested in how well the USB charging ports performed. Information on this was very vague on both the Amazon descriptions and Mocreo's website. I spoke directly with Mocreo who's responses were a little tough to understand (don't think English was their first language), but from what I was told, the older model has a 2.1A+1A setup vs. the newer model which has a 2.1A + 2.1A setup. I know this contradicts itself slightly with the description that says the newer USB goes up to 2.5A, but its what they told me.
I also tried to understand how the iPad vs. Note USB ports varied on the newer model - I was told that they are identical.
There's lots of info on the web about how iPad usb chargers have a different 'pin configuration' (involving the D+ & D- pins), and that this configuration is required to get full charging speed.
I tested the newer model using an iPad and a PortaPow usb voltage/current tester, and I believe that Mocreo is wrong; these 2 ports are technically different. The iPad port charged the iPad at ~1.99A (the OEM charger charges it at ~2.27A FYI), but the Note USB port charged it at ~0.47A. (I was not able to run a similar test on the older model).
Out of curiosity I also ran a similar test on both my Samsung Galaxy S3 & S4 using 2 different charger/cable combinations (this is likely more info than many of you will be interested in):
Samsung Galaxy S4 (using stock Nexus 7 charger & cable):
OEM Charger = 1.37A
Note USB Port = 0.86A
iPad USB Port = 0.86A
Samsung Galaxy S4 (stock Galaxy S4 charger & cable):
OEM Charger = 1.28A
Note USB Port = 0.47A
iPad USB Port = 0.47A
Samsung Galaxy S3 (stock Nexus 7 charger & cable):
OEM Charger = 1A
Note USB Port = 1A
iPad USB Port = 0.42A
Samsung Galaxy S3 (stock Galaxy S4 charger & cable):
OEM Charger = 1A
Note USB Port = 0.7A
iPad USB Port = 0.42A
Lots of info here, but what this shows is that
a) the newer Mocreo can provide 2A via USB under the right circumstances (i.e. the iPad experiment)
b) the Note USB port is different from the iPad port
c) the Mocreo could provide the same current as the stock charger for the S3 (in 1 of the 2 scenarios), but not the S4
d) the USB cable used does make a difference.
Other misc comments:
- The newer model holds a US 2-pin adapter much more securely that the older model which is great.
- The newer model black version comes in a matt textured finish which is much easier to scratch up. The newer white model comes in a standard plastic finish which I much prefer - it won't end up looking as beaten up after travels as the black.
- The newer model has separate prongs for US and Aust/China, whereas the older model used the same prongs (they just rotated to fit each country)...not certain if this makes much difference.
- Obviously the newer model has a built in fuse (and comes with a spare), whereas the older model doesn't.
Overall the newer model feels much more solidly built than the old and I'm very happy with it.
Compared to the competition, the price is better as is its USB power output.
The adapters worked flawlessly. It was simple and easy to select the right shape and the adapter was able to fit nicely into the electrical outlets and the USB ports worked just fine.
In parts of Asia (parts of Cambodia for example), they use Type A plugs (like US plugs). The major difference is that both prongs of the plug are straight (compared with the slightly bulbous end of one of the prongs in the US). This, coupled with less-than-stellar construction standards, means that anything plugged into the outlets there will be slightly wobbly.
This is a huge problem for this adapter because it's so huge and heavy (compared with a standard plug) that it often teeters on the edge of unplugging itself.
I don't consider it to be super detrimental to my experience with the adapter as a whole, but be aware that the adapter is quite large and certain outlets may not like that very much.
The only con: We did find that in recessed European circular sockets (Italy has a variety of socket types) that the prongs were barely long enough to make a decent connection as the main body of the charger would not fit into the recess. The charger also feels light and a little rattly if shaken, but given the excellent performance, I can't deduct a star for it.
