I would recommend installing the OS from scratch (I'm using Windows 7), ensuring you have the latest BIOS from dell (A06), rather than a clone of your old harddrive. Optimal data orgainzation may be slightly different on an SSD, plus you get rid of all the junk you don't need anymore. However if you have tons of software and keys that you can't find, you may be better off with the clone option (just wouldn't be my first choice).
Overall very happy with this drive. I'm not sure why it didn't work for other people with D420, too bad for them. My guess would be putting the cable in backwards (even I did that my first try until I saw a picture of it done correctly) or not being on the most recent BIOS version. I have 3 other d420s that I will be upgrading soon, perhaps with the 240gb version if the price comes down again. I will update as needed.
We had a 480GB bite the dust on us and Crucial/Micron is giving us the runaround, a headache to get it RMA'ed.
DO NOT BUY CRUCIAL SSDs, you have been warned!
Especially this model which was "MADE IN CHINA" , this is not a knock on Made in China, its a knock on Crucial themselves, which is a brand you pay extra for and should not have early failures like this (drive didn't even last 3 years...) SMH.
The performance of the msata m500's appear to have bumps in performance when you jump from 120gb to 240gb and 240gb to 480gb models. The benchmarks show real differences...but will this translate to a faster computing feel? Who knows...
I do feel like crucial/micron makes the most durable msata, when compared to Samsung or Intel. It is like Intel makes the best all around SSD in terms of reliability and performance, while Samsung emphasizes performance over reliability, and crucial emphasizes reliability over performance.
After the installation, booting and program launching is 2x faster than with the caching method and so far there is no slow down. It takes about 10 seconds from power button press to logon screen, then 2 seconds to modern UI. If you flip to desktop mode right away, the pokki menu is already loaded and not grayed out. Total boot time is around 12 seconds (prior it was more like 20). Before, it took a little time for pokki to get ready using the caching ssd method. (both methods are very fast compared to HDD).
I would like to mention though that this drive isn't the fastest out there. I have SATA 2 connection in my computer, so an msata SSD that is like 500/450 isn't really necessary for me. My max is 300MB/s due to SATA2. Thus, this drive is a perfect fit for my computer. If you are blessed with SATA 3, maybe you should look elsewhere?
One thing I would like to see though is some kind of caching software that utilizes unused DRAM (like Samsung's Magician Software) to accelerate the SSD beyond the SATA limitations.

Still running, very good value, I don't notice the speed at all!
