So I bought this and had another employee install it for me. He said it was very easy to do, so I'll have to take his word for it. All I do know is that with this system I didn't have the same issues as with the last one, it worked and did just what I needed it to do.
If you're trying to keep tabs on your kid or an employee, or heck, maybe even a suspicious spouse, I'd recommend this. And in case you're wondering, I fired the nephew :)
We mounted our system in a waterproof case that we bolted to the roof of the rail car. Inside the case with the tracking unit we included a 12vdc battery that powers the unit. We also installed a 12vdc solar controller that we connected to a solar panel adjacent to the case. This has provided real time data for weeks with no maintenance required. We highly recommend this device for any GPS tracking needs and the helpful folks at TrackmateGPS have made the installation and commissioning of the device completely painless, a refreshing change when so much customer support groups these days are located overseas. When you talk with TrackmateGPS reps you are talking to folks in New York. Bravo!
I manage the large scale irrigation system on a farm. 3-1/2 miles E-W and 2 miles N-S in size. We have 20 irrigation machines, called ‘circles’, as they go around a in a circle from a center pivot point. They water 125 acres each. As you look at the ground from aerial images (or airplane), they are fields circular in shape. Hence the name ‘circles’.
I wish to develop a system to remotely know where the circle is in the field, as it rotates around the pivot. Such as if pointing east, it is at 90°, southwest at 225° etc. Then, with remote control of the circle, which I have developed utilizing wireless Ethernet control (yes, I am a geek tinkerer, since I was a little kid in the ’70’s), I would have a complete remote control and monitor of the circles.
The OEM’s of center pivot irrigation machines, do have their solutions to accomplish this, but they are very proprietary, and expensive, both hardware and annual subscriptions, and not very responsive to customer input as to features. Thus my desire to build my own solution, where I have complete control.
So, I placed and wired this GPS device, in the last tower control box, of a circle. This just happens to be a small circle, in the corners of 4 of the larger circles, which only waters 20 acres. I had to use a power supply “wall wart”, purchased here on Amazon R-Tech New 12V 1A Switching Adapter Power Supply CCTV High Quality - 5 Pack, to power the devices 12vdc requirement, from the 120vac that the circles controls utilize.
I have no need or desire to use devices website tracking/recording/reporting abilities. So I have no review of that capability. Other than I grabbed a report, that shows the devices location for a 24 hour period. As shown in image below.
What it does show, is that it accuracy is within feet. probably even inches.
How I desire to use the device, is for it to send its minute by minute location, to my server, instead of the TrackmateGPS server. They have indicated to me that they can create a custom API to accomplish that.
Once I have that lat/lon reading, a PHP script running on my server, will compare that current position, with the pivots known fixed position, and using the Haversine forumla, create a 'bearing' or 'heading' reading, such as 345°.
The pictures included;
1) Indicator shows current device location (the last tower of the circle
2) Shows the position of the device on a given day. Its track is right on, overlaid on the map
3) The GPS device how I mounted in existing tower control box
4) With the cover on. So yes, the device works just fine, with the antennas 'hidden'
5) Just a picture from the ground
6) A screenshot of a demo PHP webpage I created, to show the readings
The screenshot of the database and circle position indication, shows what I will be able to do once they finish the API.
I will followup this review once I get this all done. Any questions, just reply to this review.
The device can be installed by automotive shop or anyone with proper tools and knowledge of wiring harness of vehicle. Automotive shops install within an hour.
