Advanced Cooling for Long-Term Reliability

Since effective cooling is a critical factor in hard disk reliability, LaCie completely redesigned its d2's cooling system. It's solid aluminum casing provides 60% more surface area than flat designs, diverting and dissipating heat more efficiently. Its innovative design means it stays cool without requiring a noise-producing fan. It also has more and larger air holes to facilitate airflow. LaCie's 3TB Thunderbolt/USB3 drive has very easy and clear setup utilities. I plugged it into a new iMac, using the included Thunderbolt cable, and the setup utility came up right away. They offer options to partition with shared Windows and Mac formatting, or all Windows, or all Mac. I decided to have 250 GB with Windows format and 2750 GB with Mac format -- since I sometimes run Windows 8 using VMWare and it will be handy to access the Windows partition to share more files between Mac and Windows. The big Mac partition is used as an alternate drive for Time Machine backups, saving multiple virtual hard drives for running different OSs in VMWare, manual backups for Lightroom, and a scratch drive for Photoshop.

The setup utility also offers an option to install (1) LaCie's backup utility, (2) a utility that enables you to access encrypted drive content from anywhere on the Internet, and (3) an encryption utility. The utilities are also available if you use a Windows machine. All of the utilities and the drive itself have good documentation in multiple languages, with the option to access up-to-date documentation from LaCie's site on the web. I decided to skip the backup utility, since Time Machine does a good job for what I need, and OS X 10.8 allows Time Machine to use two drives and alternate backups.

I have a long history with LaCie products, have probably purchased 25+ LaCie hard drives, needed for video storage and production. Do not buy this product! Just got mine. After loading up a series of video files it now clicks when it starts. In hard drive parlance--it's a time bomb. I've got to get the files off fast and send the HD back. Here's the backstory:

I used to buy LaCie hard drives only. As mentioned I had many and would daisy chain them. LaCie uses Seagate and other reputable drive companies for the actual hard drives, and manufactures (or buys) the casing. Over the years I can honestly say that EVERY SINGLE LaCie drive has failed. The raw hard drivers were not the issue. The problem was in the connections between casing and the drives. I know this because I pulled the drives, uses a drive reader and the drives worked. The problem is La Cie's--in the casing connection to the drive.

At a certain point, I switched to buying hard drives from OWC. I now have 21 1-3 TB firewire drives in a row. Never has one failed. Six months ago I was looking for Thunderbolt drives--it has been 3 years since I'd purchased a LaCie drive---and figured LaCie might have improved on the problems it was having. I bought a 6 TB Thunderbolt RAID. I back up everything to other drives, but I (yep, here it comes) didn't because I had monster projects with monster video requirements and was too cheap to split the drive into duplicating 3TB drives. Mistake! The drive died the other day. LaCie's tech people weren't helpful in the least. They didn't back up the integrity of their product. Instead, they blamed me for not backing up their drive!

Finally, back to the 4TB drive.

I already have 3 of these which I daisy chain. With Mac you can mirror drives as well as stack them virtually to a single drive. The beauty of Thunderbolt is that you can daisy chain the monitor and the drives together, but you should put the drives first and the screen last. The la cie always had two thunderbolts. Now suddenly there is only one. This really should be highlighted because it makes it useless if you want to do backups. Otherwise i have had no issues with the drives but this is a showstopper.

Very noisy during normal operation. Intermittent rattle that went away when tapped. Not a good sign. Lacie said it needed repair, and they would do that after I returned it at my expense. I could expedite things for $30 dollars. Not at all what I'd expect from a fresh-out-of-the package product OR from the manufacturer. I'm returning the unit to Amazon for a refund.

I bought this drive back in November and used it to organize my entire Lightroom catalog 60,000+ photos - large RAW files and PS layers. I wanted to have my entire catalog and digital negatives organized in one place that I could run directly from my iMac and this super fast and super quiet drive fits the bill. It's attached to my 27" iMac nearly all the time.

I have several LaCie rugged backup drives and never have had an issue with any of them. This was the first to have an issue, thus 4 stars, but it was resolved quickly and I still feel confident about this drive.

Here's what happened: After processing a load of new photos from a recent trip using it connected to my macbook pro, I plugged it back into my iMac to work on them with the larger screen, and suddenly the light blinked and then went out. I had everything but the newest changes backed up on either my laptop or my RAID drive (I wasn't postitive about my last backup so I was freaked out, but it turns out I had all but one day's edits backed up).

Anyway, I thought it might be the plug but that wasn't the case. I called LaCie, and while I'm not thrilled that I spent an hour on hold, it was worth every second in the end. Apparently, although thunderbolt cables are supposed to be bi-directional, sometimes something happens to them and they become uni-directional. So, the tech had me reverse the cable and that did the trick. It is now humming away beautifully. They also sent me a new thunderbolt cable

I think it's a great product. I wish I'd known that I could purchase data recovery insurance through them for the drive had I done so within 30 days of purchase. Getting a brand new drive when one fails (and they all do eventually) isn't the same as restoring that data.
