The series is powerfully set up and if you see the first book as the foundation, it has a solid one. Very real, 3-dimensional, believable characters who are easy to identify with; and that has continued into “Monday’s Child”. The sexually charged scenes are unabashedly convincing and ring true. (I like that!) As for the plot and ongoing mystery side, a great deal of research and set-up prep has obviously been done here… and done well! The only real comparison that comes to my mind is the beautifully done memoir-based historical novel “1610: A Sundial in a Grave” by Mary Gentle… and that is high praise.
I really look forward to the rest of the series, and if the bottom-line believability of the characters and story line continues, it will be one hell of a ride!
Fair of Face is the second novel in The Extraordinary Days Series, and it certainly doesn't disappoint. This novel is set several years after the first book and focuses on one of the little girls, Sarah rescued in the flood that devastated the little town of Obegrande in 1991 (No Ordinary Day). Now a grown woman, Sarah, known to the world as the supermodel Briony, has left the glamour of high fashion behind, and returned to her hometown in the picturesque Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York to escape the frenzy of the press, and to hide. But why? This question fuels investigative reporter Erik Bryson who sets out to find out what has become of Briony, and falls in lover with a woman as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside.
The story that unfolds in this novel is one of love, strength, survival, and trust. It is the story of a woman who leaves the public eye to recover from her own struggles, but who is strong and kind enough to put the needs of others ahead of her own. There are twists and turns in this story that keep the reader engaged and rooting for the burgeoning love between Briony and Erik.
There are two things that I absolutely loved about this book:
The first is the way Becks masterfully weaves the history of the Adirondacks into the book. The mountain peeks and the stories they harbor really come to life. I have to admit, this book has got me really looking forward to my vacation in Lake Placid and Lake Saranac later this month.
The second thing I love about this book is that a portion of all of the money from sales is being donated to the American Cancer Society, what a beautiful gift!
If there is one criticism I could make of this book, it would be that I would like a greater window in Sara/ Briony's mind. I wanted to know more about her and more about the motivations that drive her actions.
Overall this is an excellent second book. I am seriously looking forward to reading book three!
You'll find, great characters, mystery, romance, and more in this memorable story.
Like a twisting Adirondack road the story takes many turns and the plot will keep you guessing. The characters become people you want to learn more about. There's humor, adventure, glamor, and intrigue.
It's hard to stop reading because each chapter ending makes you eager to read more.
The book is worth the time and the money.
