4.0 out of 5 stars Well-named. Amazing but very specialised functions. You may need a particular type of PSU.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well-named. Amazing but very specialised functions. You may need a particular type of PSU.

This pedal is probably not for anyone not used to using and blending effects because that is the sole basis for this appropriately-named machine. It offers huge scope for creativity and experimentation within the very particular bounds of delay, reverb and shimmer. I won't even attempt to provide a full analysis of what is achievable because there are just so many possibilities and ways of using it - save to say that in it's simplest form it can be used as three separate effects which can be programmed and used on their own or in any combination or sequence. You have two delays to work with and one reverb (including shimmer), but each of those has several options and all can be tweaked to suit your needs.

Do you see what I mean? - Anything beyond that basic outline would need to become a full multi-page tutorial. As for the quality of those many effects and blends - they are astonishing. Anyone who enjoys using those types of effect or - more to the point - anyone who loves to experiment with more ambient soundscapes, will almost certainly feel that this pedal is a godsend.

By far the best way to understand it and start to explore it is to search YouTube for good demos and reviews. If you want an upload which expertly demonstrates a variety of sounds AND which puts on-screen details of the associated settings, then start with one from 'Strings and Things'. Amazon won't let me display the URL and the upload's title is shared by several others from other sources, so look for the StringandThings appellation ... 'Mooer Ocean Machine Pedal Demo'

I also particularly recommend this upload - 'Devin Townsend Ocean Machine with MOOER' because, of course, he is the inspiration for this pedal and the only reason that it exists. Rob Chapman has also uploaded a useful demo. Look for 'Mooer Ocean Machine - The Devin Townsend Dual Delay & Reverb Pedal'. A third recommendation is an upload by Guitar Interactive - 'Mooer Devin Townsend Ocean Machine Rever and Delay Pedal | Review'. However, there are a great many other demos out there.

So - no downsides to the pedal that I've found as yet. So why only 4 stars?

The unit itself is definitely 5 stars but I had a problem. I already had several 9v negative centre PSUs in stock but none of them would power-up the 'Ocean Machine'. I knew something was happening because the amp produced a harsh regular clicking but the machine itself did nothing. No lights. No effect when pressing footswitches. I assumed it was a faulty unit but to play safe and to give the unit the benefit of doubt, I ordered a Mooer PSU (see photo). Hey Presto - it worked! This clearly seems to suggest that the 'Ocean Machine' is very sensitive to the type of PSU (or its connector) and if it's THAT sensitive, then Mooer should supply it as part of the kit.

An added niggle is that the 'Quick Start Guide' is exactly that. It's a bare bones leaflet and unlike many of the pedals produced by Electro Harmonix, there are no suggested settings that you can use as the basis for starting your experiments. To anyone not familiar with multi-effects units with a wide range of tweakable settings (and a good idea of how to access and control them), then this unit deserves something more like a manual than a leaflet with a few diagrams and the odd list of instructions. The guide also lacks a troubleshooting section which would, presumably have identified the reason for that clicking sound I mentioned earlier.
