Inside Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes
Rich Material for DMs
The first five chapters present material for a Dungeon Master to add depth to a campaign that involves the characters in one or more of the ongoing conflicts described there.
Like Mordenkainen’s account of the history of elves and how their many races, their many lifestyles, and the unflagging hatred between the drow and the elves of the Material Plane, all go back to a single historical tragedy.
Over 150 Monsters
In addition to Mordenkainen’s musings on the endless wars of the multiverse, the book contains game statistics for dozens of monsters.
Get rules for demons and devils, several varieties of elves and duergar, and a vast array of creatures from throughout the planes of existence.
More Options for Character Creation
With Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes, races and subraces like gith, duergar, and more become playable as characters for the first time in fifth edition D&D.
The book is also full of material to flesh out your characters with rich lore on classic races like elves and dwarves.

The only bummer was the section on the archdevils. I wish they had included stat blocks for more of the "big names" of the hells, like Dispater or Levistus. Instead they focused on the lieutenants and "dukes" of the nine hells. They are still cool threats, but just not what I was expecting. I also wish they had included more art for the star spawn.
These shortcomings would normally have lessened my rating by one star, however, they included some awesome content that I was not expecting. They have several "boons" that are aligned with various big-bads of the multiverse. You can use these to customize other monsters or NPCs to differentiate them based on how they are aligned. Does your cult of Asmodeus have a berserker? Give that rage monster some unique abilities bestowed only to the devil lord's most powerful or honored servants. These boons are super easy to use, usually increasing one or two ability scores by a bit and giving them unique actions that can catch experienced players off-guard. These super thematic boons earned that star back and then some.
I absolutely love this book. Amazing art, truly horrifying creatures, and some really fun options for player character races.
Now you could, like I, solely use apps like Fantasy Grounds (Steam client) and or free PDFs, But nothing replaces the feeling and ease of use of having physical copies of each guide in hand. Plus as a fun bonus they looks stunning in my bookshelf. Make you look even more professional as a DM in person. Lastly, all six together give you an extreme launching pad for designing, running and modifying premade or homemade campaigns!
For 20 a pop, what is normally a $300 purchase turns into a $120 steal, never will you ever get a better deal on these books brand new.
My only regret was getting the one book I did have before this sale but ce n'est pas grave.
Now onto the book itself, it accounts several of the biggest wars ever recorded in the Fantasy Realms from the perspective of someone recording lost hidden history. Adds many variants to Teiflings which come with as you’d imagine, all have unique abilities to match! Then there is more background knowledge and generators for Halflings, plus, new foes and a few new items as well. Very centered on devils, species and lore wise. Pretty solid book, I’d put it right after Volo but right before Xanthar.
Want to know about the Blood War between Devils and Demons? How about how elves came to exist and why the Drow are so hated by surface elves? What plane do the Gith come from and why have they been at war for so long? This is the kind of lore you will find in this compendium as written by the great wizard, Mordenkainen (and most likely scribed by Bigby...another great wizard).
Want to spin some new flavor to your campaign by introducing new or variant creatures? There is a plethora of new creature stat blocks here with the majority seemingly fiends. Arch Devils, Demon Lords, Yugoloths, Cambions, and more. There also new varieties of Trolls, Elementals, and Undead to name but a few.
Again, while you can get by without this as a DM, it will expand your options by a wide margin. For a player, you can gain new lore on races and their pantheons which can help with character creation. If you are both, then it simply means you will get even more out of it.
Additionally, lots of these monsters are higher CR and tuned for higher level parties. I would recommend Volo's to most DMs before this one since it contains a greater variety of creatures in terms of lore and CR, but this one has a lot awesome stuff for inspiration or a higher level party. Lots of fiends and aberrations, so if those are your thing, this is a great pickup.
As for the physical book I received, it had no issues.
Then comes the monster stat blocks at the end, and wow, some of those must have been monsters in their own right just to stat.Kudos to whoever was willing to take on that task. (looking at the guys who put some number behind demon lords and Arch Devils alike)
But, the artwork was kind of, meh. I felt like the demon lords had great artwork, their likenesses captured well. The Devils had a few good portrayals, but seemed lower quality somehow than the demons. Maybe its just my subjectivity. That, however, has nothing to do with outright missing artwork. The Star Spawn had a total of 5 stat blocks, and precisely one of the vastly different spawns had artwork. This wouldnt be so bad, if I felt that they were stuggling for ink or space in the tome, but the dual page, full color concept art of Shadowfell skeleton scene said otherwise.
All in all, worthwhile, but it seemed to have a few things missing.
I think the best aspect of the book is the boss monsters it offers. All of the demon lords and archdevils are available to run as monsters in a campaign, with CR ratings ranging from 21 to 26. There are also a lot of variations for tieflings and cambions, and tons of material to make a demon or devil cult with.
The monsters in the book are varied and almost all disgusting---perfect enemies for players. I especially like the ultimate elemental enemies, which could make for great end-campaign bosses.
Overall, a solid addition to my 5e library. I only wish Tiamat and Vecna had been included among the foes.
