Both Nate and Sarah change dramatically over the course of this book. Nate goes from an angry, self centered, bitter man to a very loving friend and father. And Sarah finally becomes her own person vs being a copy of Lily and Pearl.
This book had a lot going on - maybe a little bit too much. We have lies, betrayal, secrets (we didn't want to know), orphans, a nasty step father, an evil bad guy, a railroad scam, a secondary romance and some hot love scenes. Almost makes your head spin!
In the end everything comes together very near and tidy and we get a very HEA.
So why not 5 stars? Well for me the story was almost ruined by the connection between Nate and belle - I felt that the depth of the connection was unnecessary and it hurt me for Sarah. I think the connection could have been less and still served the story well enough to be believable. I also didn't like that Sarah kept the whole truth of her connection with Nate from Lex. That seemed like a betrayal to me. And I could have definitely done without the details she gave to Sarah. OMG - family dinners are with them are going to be awkward!
Other than that - I loved the book and the series. I am looking forward to reading Storm's book as well as Gabe's
I have no reservations about recommending this book!!
I get rapped up in these stories and the characters, I enjoy the drama, intrigue, danger, sadness and joy that is through out the book, but love the honest love that prevails!
Read them from book one, I'm sure you will love them too.
Sarah Kincaid goes to her mother's funeral. Now, her mother wasn't your ordinary cookie-baking variety--she was a madam and partner with Cal Bartholomew. So Sarah settles up, collects her inheritance and her mother's jewelry, and heads back to Texas.
Nate Barton doesn't have a whole lot to recommend him. He's a gambler and a con man, and likes his life just fine. Except Sarah has his mother's jewelry (Nate's father, Cal, had given the jewelry to Sarah's mother when they married), and half his inheritance, to boot. The fact that everyone thought Nate was dead was of no consequence. He had to somehow or another get that money, and especially the ruby ring from Sarah.
What a wild ride! This story takes twists and turns that would confuse a sidewinder, but all for the sake of love. It has spicy romance, some good ol' western action, and memorable characters. I can hardly wait for the next Caroline Clemmons book!
The characters however are a little flat. There's a bad guy, a horribly bad guy, and the good ones, without many interesting twists to them.
An exception may be Storm. And I'm sure that if there is another book in the series it will be about him.
What happens between Sara and Nate was a little unbelievable to me. Although there is enough proof that extramarital sex has happened through the ages, it is also true that in victorian times it wasn't a common thing, specially among "well bred" girls. I'm sure that when it happened it was after a skillful seduction or perhaps when the girl was so ignorant that she didn't realize on time what was happening. The part where Sarah goes to his room and talks of bold predetermination, and it doesn't ring true.
