I feel that the other reviews here are off base. This is a product that I have been running on my 2008 Mac with the greatest of ease. It has so many sounds and loops that are easily interchangeable to create completely unique pieces. This has often been reviews as the death of the MPC elsewhere, and while I don't know if I would quite go that far, this is an incredible product.

The iLok issue that another review complains about, all you have to do is register the product and you don't need to use the iLok anymore. If you use any other software that uses iLok, all of the codes can be stored on one iLok as well. The iLok is there so that you cannot run pirated software, people that actually purchased and own the product should take this as a good thing in the end. Use Motu BPM if you are serious about drum programming, it literally is a game changer and that is coming from someone who was weened on the MPC 2KXL for 5 times the price!

Fact: you always have to have iLok in your USB port to run BPM and MachFive. It would be worth it if the software was great...it isn't. I've had BPM for 2 years now and still can't find a use for it. Sure, it sounds good standalone and has some interesting loops and kits but I always end up shutting it down and using something else. That's really all I can say. The software is very capable but every single time I put a song together on it or create a beat or musical cue with it, I end up exporting the MIDI pattern(s) to my DAW and shutting BPM down. I bought it to be my "secret weapon" but it's just taking up HD space. Again, there's nothing bad about it, I just always end up shutting it down and using something else. Recently, I was trying out some ideas with it and it was sounding OK but then I just kinda hit a wall with it, so I did my usual SMF export and shut it down, finally just deciding that the sound was dated and not worth the effort anymore.

this program is unusable. The code is so slow and buggy that
my dualcore cannot handle it. Get machine or Battery.
The library is ok but the performance is terrible.
I am running it under Leopard.

BPM is actually not a bad software package, but they insist on using the "iLOK" protection scheme which uses a USB dongle to contain your license, which is both inconvenient AND easily lost. If you work on a laptop, be warned that one of your valuable USB slots will be taken up whenever you run BPM. MOTU is not planning to fix this, so caveat emptor.
