MSI R9 390 GAMING 8G Graphics Card
Smart cooling, stay quiet.
MSI’s Twin Frozr V Thermal Designs are equipped with ZeroFrozr technology which was first introduced by MSI back in 2008. ZeroFrozr technology eliminates fan noise in low-load situations by stopping the fans when they are not needed. Compared to other graphics cards, there is no continuous hum of airflow to tell you there’s a powerful graphics card in your gaming rig. This means you can focus on gaming without the distraction of other sounds coming from your PC.
Twin Frozr V - Cooler, Quieter, Better Gaming
With every new generation of GPUs comes more performance. With every new generation of MSI Twin Frozr we give you less noise and heat!. We’ve listened to all your requests and the new Twin Frozr V is smaller, features stronger fans, generates less noise, keeps your graphics card and its components cooler and matches perfectly with your MSI GAMING motherboard including some funky LED lightning. We’ve spent 18 months on the development of the Twin Frozr V, including field testing in gaming cafés to ensure the cards have the quality and stability to give you the FPS you need.
Advanced Dispersion Blade design generates 19 per cent more airflow without increasing drag for supreme silent performance.
MSI Gaming Graphics Cards give you more performance out of the box. Whether you use the card pre-overclocked or use the Gaming App to use its full potential, you can just get right into the game and enjoy sublime performance. Overclocking through the MSI Gaming App is covered by warranty to take away your worries. Get in there and start winning.
Enhanced dissipation efficiency
MSI has fitted Twin Frozr coolers with the all new Airflow Control technology which guides more airflow directly onto the heat pipes by using special deflectors on the heat sink. In addition, this exclusive heat sink design increases heat sink surface area, greatly enhancing the dissipation efficiency.

When I unboxed the card, it came with a 6-pin and 8-pin slot; just use the small 6-pin to 8-pin converter cable they give and make sure both slots are connected. It's somewhat large for a two-fan card, but I managed to still fit it in a standard mid tower. It also comes with a backplate, which is a definite plus.
After installing the hardware, I turned my computer on in safe mode through msconfig and uninstalled everything from Nvidia (except PhysX, which isn't a problem since it can't uninstall in safe mode). Then, I rebooted into normal mode and installed the recommended drivers for the card from AMD's website. I had no problems with the installation, and after another reboot, the card was good to go. I was quite surprised since it seems AMD often has problems with drivers.
In terms of games, it plays Shadow of Mordor, completely maxed out, at 1440p at 50-60 fps, and Witcher 3 on High settings, at 1440p at 50-60 fps. In other words, the results will be even more promising at 1080p. I couldn't ask for more for $330.
Speaking of price, I've noticed that the Prime version sold out, so the price rose to $370, so I recommend finding it somewhere else, or waiting for the next Prime-eligible batch to ship.
As for temperature, the fans only turn on under load. On idle, it sits at 61 C @ 300 MHz. Under load, it's 71 C @ 1050 MHz. I haven't tried overclocking, but I'd advise staying under 80 C.
In summary, I've had it for about a week, and I'm very happy with this purchase so far. In terms of longevity, the 8GB of VRAM should help it remain competitive over the next few years as newer games with more textures and bigger maps come out.

If you are looking for a card to last you a couple years, this one will be great, it can easily handle 1440p and on 1080p it is can almost always get 100+ frames on ultra. With Directx12 coming out soon, the amd cards have proof that they will be much faster than their Nvidia counterparts, though we can't tell yet. If you don't mind the extra power consumption this is one of the best performance for dollar cards out there.
I watched many video reviews, tracked pricing, watch more videos and ultimately went with my gut. The performance so far been phenomenal.
My old games are either high or ultra with little to no issues. The one I'm probably impressed with the most so far is Skyrim. Yes, it's an older game but I've heavily modded the game with more NPC's, enemies and skirmishes across the countryside.
The second is Shadows of Mordor. Awesome game and super eye candy on top of that.
For those concerned about the heat, the fans don't kick until you've been playing for a while. I have a push/pull config so I would make sure you have a setup to dissipate heat if you plan on having long play sessions.
Power consumption is a non issue since I purchased a 750 watt EVGA power supply.
Anyone concerned about drivers need not worry; AMD Crimson has been great and trouble free.
This GPU is simply great. It plugged right up to the board and installed working W10 drivers immediately. I have only tested the card on Skyrim 1080p with everything maxed out and using Valley Benchmark. I purchased this card primarily to play AAA titles, most importantly, Star Wars: Battlefront. The card doesn't break a sweat on Skyrim maxed out (never got above 70C).
