The R7970 Lightning features the industry-leading Twin Frozr IV thermal design. With 8mm SuperPipes soldered to an all-copper, nickle-plated base, twin 100mm Propeller Blade fans, and a high density heat fin stack, the R7970 Lightning is up to 16C cooler than a competing design.

It also features Dust Removal Technology, which spins the fans in full reverse for 30 seconds at system start to minimize dust buildup and ensure optimal thermal performance.

The R7970 Lightning also features two full-length heatsinks that cover the front and rear of the PCB, cooling and protecting critical components on the graphics card while preventing PCB flex.


The R7970 Lightning features a robust 17-phase PWM design that delivers twice as much current to the GPU versus the reference design for maximum performance and stability.

The card has a good sturdy construction feel to it.

At the beginning I thought the card was defective, however, as it turns out it was not the cards' fault so here are the solutions:

- If you run a DVI monitor at 1920x1200 (max single link DVI resolution) using single-link DVI cable you may experience corruption, blinking, and other strange things. I have no explanation as to why (my single link cable has been working fine at this resolution with this monitor for years). So, for this particular resolution use a good "real" dual-link-DVI cable and it will work just fine.

- If you play multiple videos simultaneously and you experience symptoms like video stop playing, blanking, screen corruption, etc it turned out to be the AMD drivers. Getting the latest Beta driver (at the time of writing this review: driver date: 11/15/2012 ver: the MSI driver) seems to fix the problem.

generally the latest beta driver and few days for card to burn-in stabilized everything and the card is working great

I bought this card specifically to handle multiple-high-resolution displays (2560x1600 + 1600x1200 + 1920x1200) and it is working great

For gamers, I tested using 2560x1600 & highest settings and it handles the games amazingly well.

Other thoughts:
- as mentioned in previous review, this card is VERY long (longer than most other 7970s) so ensure to check its measurement against your case + the cooler on the back could block a 3rd slot.

This is a well built card made for the enthusiast. Cost a bit more but I got my card to overclock to 1260mhz and demolishes games at 1440p. One thing I did not like is the card is very wide and I had to remove the GPU Reactor Cover(not the reactor itself) to install the card. So far very pleased with my purchase and plan to stick with MSI from now on.

PERFORMANCE: First thing to point out: at the time of writing, this is the single fastest 7970 available in the USA. The heatsink design is superb. It is extremely simple to overclock, including voltage control. The "GPU Reactor", as MSI calls it, is a tiny daughter board with additional power phases: more phases in your power conversion results in a more consistent voltage supplied to your GPU core, which in turn means more stability while overclocking.

As for the GPU itself, I'm able to drive my games at 120+FPS consistently, which results in very smooth performance on a 120Hz 1080p monitor (BenQ). At those frame rates, vsync is less necessary, because screen tearing is so fast, tearing artifacts become difficult to notice. However, if you were to enable vsync, it would afford a smaller performance penalty on the total input-output latency (8ms rather than 16ms). This means your mouse will feel more responsive: more like driving a motorcycle than piloting a boat.

NOISE: Noise a big complaint among enthusiasts. This card is almost dead silent even under load. While the airflow is less directed to the exhaust port than on reference coolers, the thermals don't lie: this card runs cooler under load while overclocked than a reference card at stock speed runs under half-load.

OUTPUTS: 4x mDP. This is one of few models that can drive 6 displays concurrently. DisplayPort is the best interface for monitors available right now: the connectors provide strong retention and positive feedback when connected, yet are easy to connect and inexpensive to purchase. DisplayPort is the only way to drive multiple displays with the signal in sync between them, which makes a huge difference when playing games in Eyefinity.

Got this to replace an MSI R6970 Lightning which has a Dual Link DVI capable of pushing 2560x1600. For some reason they only put 2 single link dvi connectors on the R7970 Lightning. In short, if your monitor is 2560x1600 and takes DVI you might not want this card. Although, I'll work around that as my experience with the previous model tells me the card will be fast.
