I wanted a computer that would be somewhat "future proof". Which, to me, as of late 2015, meant a 6th Gen i7/i5 processor, at least an Nvidia 960M with at least 3GB VRAM (DDR5), 12 GB RAM (ideally DDR4), full HD matte screen, a USB C port (ideally Thunderbolt 3), Windows 10. Only a handful of options met all the criteria within my budget, specifically, the Asus GL552VW-DH74, The Acer "Predator" and this GE62. The "Predator" looks silly. So, it came down to the Asus and the MSI. Both have some metal accents but are mostly plastic builds. I like the overall look of the Asus better, but ultimately, the MSI just had better specs for the price.
On the positive side; it runs like a dream. It looks great. I didn't like the glowing MSI logo on the cover, but I covered this with a Georgia Tech sticker (which glows). The keyboard feels great and the customizable back lighting is a neat gimmick. (The button layouts are a little odd though, see below). Both drives, the SSD and the HDD, are fast. I've tried ran the Witcher 3 on high graphics and it didn't break a sweat.
The biggest concern I have is the build quality.
A very concerning oddity (and the reason this gets 3 rather than 4 stars) is that the bottom panel is so weak that you can cause the trackpad keys to click by pressing on the underside. To clarify, if you close the computer and turn it upside down. Then press on the underside of where the trackpad is, the left and right mouse buttons will click. You can also do it with the screen open, so it's not a matter of the screen depressing into the buttons. The under panel is so weak you can depress it far enough to push the button sensor against the top of the button enough to activate it. The biggest problem with this is that when I put it in a bag, any pressure on the underside clicks the buttons and wakes the computer up. Fortunately, 90% of the time my laptop is a desktop. It only needs to travel once a month or so. But, if I needed this to be mobile, it'd be a deal breaker.
The screen case (the part that lifts up containing the screen) is extremely flimsy. It appears that they made it as thin as possible to make the laptop thinner. To me, it is unacceptably flexible. You can't lift or close it by a corner (I know you shouldn't with laptops, but it happens). If you try to, the screen just bends like a piece of paper and creaks and cracks. Pressing on the middle of the panel while open or closed you can deform the panel a 1/4 to a 1/2 inch. I have little faith this would stand up to any amount of travel. On the plus side, part of this is that the hinges are nice and tight. The screen doesn't wobble at all when typing, etc.
Likewise, the bottom cover is thin plastic that bends and creaks in numerous places. There are a lot of vents, which is nice for heat control, but they feel very weak. I believe they would break with little pressure (not willing to test it).
The other thing I don't like is the non-standard keyboard layout. For example, the windows key is on the right of the space bar. The thing that drives me crazy is the delete and insert keys are swapped with the home and end keys from the normal positions. That is, the delete key is over the number pad and the home and end are over the backspace. You can reassign the keys in the SteelSeries App, but that doesn't work for system commands, e.g. Ctrl-Alt-Delete, or any time the App isn't running, such as on startup.
It comes with a bunch of bloatware. First priority out of the box is to run a clean install of Windows 10. You can download an installer from Microsoft now for free and the computer will automatically authorize the install (no Windows Product Key needed). The Drivers can be found on the MSI website under GE62-6QF, the international model number. (Last I looked, the 001 model listing on their website had no files under support. 6QF is what it says on the box.)
Quick Update: You will get a BSOD (machine_check_exception) if you open any MS Office app/file, or any Steam game. Update your BIOS to the latest version to solve this. You can quickly confirm this works by opening OneNote after the BIOS update. It should open normally instead of getting a BSOD.
- Superb specs
- Screen is amazing once you tweak the settings
- Great keyboard quality
- Dual fans with button control is a nice touch
- Quite fast even without SSD
- Surprisingly light for a gaming laptop
- Priced quite fairly
- Poor hinge quality. This is the big one. It's what stopped me from giving 5 stars. The hinges feel a bit flimsy, and are positioned right at the outer edges of the laptop (Instead of being mounted slightly inside like the ASUS GL551). Now, this won't be a problem if you keep it on a desk, but if you're carrying it about in a bag, then treat it like glass. Hinge designs like this one make it difficult to store in a bag vertically because the entire weight of the laptop is on the bottom hinge edge and it doesn't help that it is flimsy to start off with. Make sure the bottom of your bag is soft or get a bag where you can store it with horizontally.
- The plastics are of quite poor quality. Flex a bit too much and the plastic between the hinges is even worse. However, once you open that lovely lid, the brushed metal around the keyboard is quite superb. I just wish MSI took more care with the plastics.
- Took ages to start up first time. Get rid of Norton Antivirus immediately.
- No activity light on CD bay but you'll hardly need it.
- Keyboard arrangement is weird. No Windows key on the Left; it's odd because you can disable it with the MSI software which would have made sense if the key was on the left. No separate Home and End keys. You have to use Fn+PgUp/PgDn. No properties/menu key (not even with Fn). No media pause/play Fn key shortcuts.
- Battery life is quite poor. You'll get 2:30 to 3:00 hours of non-gaming use if you're lucky. Doesn't really matter though. It's meant for gaming. Not portability. You could probably push that to 4 if you tinker with the power settings but I haven't tried that yet.
- Screen made my eyes water slightly. This is rectified by adjusting the screen colour scheme to your preference using the software.
So, to conclude, if you can bear with these minor cons, can take good care of the laptop (especially the plastics), and don't want to spend $200 more on a 970M then consider getting this laptop. It is truly magnificent.
