1) Buy an M.2 SSD! The #1 issue holding back this laptop was the hard drive performance. I invested about $200 in a 500GB M.2 SSD and I had to rip off the sticker on the laptop that says "WARRANTY VOID IF BROKEN", but the improvement was drastic. Boot time is insane and loading windows explorer and other programs is essentially instantaneous when it used to take several seconds on day 1.
2) Completely wipe and re-install Windows 10! This was necessary for me after installing the SSD. I'm told there are ways to clone the original disc and then have it transferred to the SSD, and I actually did this, but I was unable to change the cloned SSD to the default C: drive that Windows boots from. So, a fresh install I did! Wiped everything and put Windows onto the SSD. WOW! It's like a whole new computer after the SSD goes in Windows is freshly installed. Yes, it's a pain having to go to the MSI website and downloading all of the drivers, etc. so that your keyboard software, dragon software, etc. works again. But WORTH IT.
3) Configure NVIDIA control center to use your dedicated card for rendering! By default, this is NOT enabled. You have to go to "Manage 3D Settings" and change the global setting to use the dedicated card instead of the built-in Intel HD graphics chip. Otherwise, all of your favorite games will be using the crappy onboard graphics and you'll be wondering why you spend $1200 on a laptop that can't even run Rocket League.
I went from chopping my graphics settings on Rocket League all the way down to "Performance" on day 1 so that I could even play properly to now buzzing along at 60FPS with all settings on MAX. I don't know why things don't work perfectly right out of the box, but once you take the right steps, this machine is AMAZING for the price.
Don't be shy! Great buy for the price, just takes a little extra effort.
The build is very nice and looks very sleek even tho it is a little thick. The hinge is also very sturdy, I can't ever see it breaking (unlike the lenovo y50 since there were many complaints online if the hinge breaking) The keys are comfortable and I adjusted to them pretty quickly. I love that the fans are at the back which means less overheating and you don't have to worry about resting your laptop on something to prop it up. I've seen complaints about the touchpad (I will say I hate the sound of the clicking it makes), however it doesn't affect me at all since I use a wireless mouse (I got the Acctrend Wireless Mouse which you can find on amazon for $13)
The only thing that really disappointed me was the backlit keyboard, as the previous photo had the rbg keyboard which could be customized. I was looking forward to that only to see that it was only one color - white. Also the brushed aluminum material is a fingerprint magnet, but it doesn't bother me much because I have a habit of constantly wiping any electronic I have lol. However, everything else is perfect and I absolutely love this laptop!
I'm giving this a 4 due to the damn software issues scattered about. Plus the virus that is nortons anti virus is annoying. hardware wise you wont be disappointed. But software will take some getting used to and customization. If you're tech savvy a day or so of headaches to get it where you want. If this was $200 cheaper than what I paid for it, probably would be close to a 5 star. Oh and check the brand number to compare it to. there are 4 different versions of this type with slight differences in hardware and price range. I bought the cheapest one. Oh and the keyboard has a weird font type. Doesn't quite look like a normal one. It would be nicer if the keyboard were a bit bigger as well. . I know this was sporadic, but meh, buy it in a store if you can to skip ups drama.
