Now I'm stuck trying to find a place to buy a replacement screw instead of finishing putting my new computer together.
Update: so I ended up finding 3rd M2 screw kits, so I was able to continue building the computer.
Now i'm stuck on the fact that the computer will only boot up if i put 1 stick of Ram in the 3rd slot. The manual for this board states i should put sticks in 2nd and 4th slot first, but when I do that, it never boots up.
For testing purposes I've tried every combination of placement with the 2 sticks, as well as using a single stick in any slot. it will only boot up when a stick is placed in the 3rd slot. (either of the sticks at this point works). Upon booting up i'm immediately greeted with a "ram in sub-optimal slot" message, recommending me to place them instead in the 2nd and 4th slot first.
Update: It's been a while since my last update. After testing the ram in another machine and having it work, I contacted MSI customer support and explained the situation, They wanted me to get different ram to test on the faulty board (which i had none, and did not want to spend more money), and wanted me to do a whole bunch of other stuff testing each component separately, try different BIOS updates, and more steps that felt unnecessary. Additionally, they wanted me to pay to send them the darn thing, so i'm not sure what's the point on them advertising the item has warranty. Fortunately, while MSI's customer support felt slow and troublesome, Amazon's was exemplary, i explained the item was faulty, and was immediately given the option to return the faulty board, and they sent me a replacement, which arrived within 48 hours. The replacement board worked flawlessly (and the replacement board even included the M2 screw!).
I'm bumping the review up to 3 stars, leaving 1 star off for the headache and annoyance the faulty one caused, and leaving 1 more star off for MSI's customer service itself. I understand they have to do a lot of troubleshooting on their end, but if a product has warranty, the process should be painless and quick, and not charge the customer to send in the item to fix. To clarify, the board itself is exceptional (once you get a non-faulty one).
If anyone out there experiences similar issues or others, and feels like MSI's costumer service is proving difficult, I recommend reaching out to amazon, they did right by me quickly and painlessly.
It's in a really small bag that looks kinda useless with a sticker of a barcode and number. The little guy is hiding in there.
In case I forget to revisit this later, docking a star for the annoying hard to find screw.
It says on the box supports Windows 10 and it means it. We ended up just installing Windows 10. It was super simple and took no time at all. All of the ports worked fine the entire way. I recommend this to anyone that runs Windows 10.
WINDOWS 7 WILL NOT WORK WITH THIS MOTHERBOARD
Top international reviews
- Nice build quality
- Bios is very customisable and the UI is great
- Lots of overclocking features (if you're into that)
- Nice software suite and live update for drivers ans bios
- Included documentation is quite poor
- Connexions on the mobo are poorly marked, some are jusr not marked at all
- Upon set up I had to clear the CMOS multiple times to get my rig to work. The bios kept losing drive config.
- Had trouble detecting my Geforce 1070 almost every time I booted. The card worked fine prior to install on this
mobo and works fine in my new build.
I realize I might have been sent a lemon, but based on my experience, I just can't recommend this mobo.
I have one complaint though, it's advertised as having an HDMI port, but it does not have one... it's got a displayport, vga and dvi, so I need to buy a DP to HDMI adapter to use my existing in wall hdmi cable setup. Minor problem, but still, it's advertised as having an HDMI port... that gave me some trouble today so that's why I'm giving it 4 stars. Other than that I'll just buy an adapter here and be done with it.
MSI Z390-A PRO LGA1151 (Intel 8th and 9th Gen) M.2 USB 3.1 Gen 2 DDR4 ----> HDMI <----- DP Cfx Dual Gigabit LAN ATX Z39
Now, it's an awesome motherboard for those who want high performance and option to upgrade to highest specs without spending too much money.
And it supports overclocking too.
The only drawback I could find would be :
1. Only 1 slot for M.2
2. No RGB
3. No USB - C slot for front panel
