-Bios was updated to the newest version upon arrival
-Strengthened top pcie x16 slot
-No RGB LEDs, only red or off(a minor point at this price range)
-Dark red lettering on PCB. It's difficult to connect front panel IO without the manual.
-The heatsink to the left of the cpu gets pretty hot...I'll definitely be replacing that thermal pad in the very near future.
[NOTE: I'll be updating this after I have replaced the thermal pads with fujipoly extreme xr-m pads]
-The bios is difficult to navigate without a mouse. I'm old school, so I'm used to a keyboard only bios.
-Only one m.2 port...Basically you have the choice of one NVME drive, or a single optane module.
For now, it's working great. I'd recommend it.
UPDATE - The vrm thermal pads are a joke. Thin, rubbery, and bad at transferring heat. I couldn't get a stable overclock until I replaced them. If you're buying this motherboard, buy some thermal pads(fujipoly if you can afford them), unscrew the heatsinks, and replace them.
I spent weeks researching motherboards for a solid upgrade to my old parts (DDR3-level products.) The Z270 Tomahawk is a powerful and sleek looking machine that complements any build with red LEDs. I paired this board with a MSI GTX 1070, 250GB Samsung SSD, 16GB RAM of Ballistix LT Sport, i5-7600k CPU, and a H7 Cryorig Universal CPU cooler. All my parts fit beautifully in a NZXT Carbide Series case (red, of course.)
The BIOS interface is easy to navigate and makes overclocking a breeze. The simple "push to boost" function with my CPU took a huge stress of me since overclocking can sometimes be tricky and nerve wracking. Rebuilding my PC took no time at all with the labelled pieces on the board. And now starts up in mere moments with the included Optane boost from Intel.
My only snafu was that one of the eight RAM locking hooks was loose, but not broken. It turned out I didn't need to use that slot anyway so it didn't make a difference to me, but I'm sure it could be a concern for those who are particular about their tech babies.
Note: I use this build for streaming and gaming and requires high performance from my parts. I've been utilizing these parts in tandem for roughly three weeks without issue.
Glad to report mobo works thus far. I was able to boot into windows off an m.2 ssd, and one of the USB ports I tested works.
Still not happy, had to order replacement io shield because Amazon has no easy access to contact their sellers to figure this out.
2 stars because it still works. Would be 1 star but it was a decent price. Otherwise would return for actual new in box motherboard.

No issues with installation
MSI live updated did a quick update immediatly
Nice colours and red leds (my theme is black and red)
Easy to use an navigate BIOS
Card seems to be shorter and hung over the standoff (weird as it replaced an ATX card)
I was worried it may break as flexed a bit
Bios used my HD as a boot priority, even though Win 10 was on my SSD. I was able to fix it by going in, finding priority options and putting SSD as a profile (not a priority). Weird vs a regular bios.
All in all, I am quite impressed and do love how everything looks and how it functions. I would highly recommend. Lets hope the longevity is there as well as too soon to tell obviously.
Mein altes Board Z170-A, wollte von "heute auf morgen" nicht mehr, es ließ sich einfach nicht mehr starten.
Also musste ganz schnell Ersatz her.
